Harding, a member of Team USA at the 2017 IAAF World Junior Cross Champion- ships, covered the five-kilometer dis- tance in 15:05.3. He was only bested by Australian professional indepen- dent Craig Huffer, who is mentored by former Michigan head coach Ron Warhurst. Notes: The Wolverine squad placed four other runners in the top 10 at the Michigan Open. Redshirt freshman Will Landowne ran 15:07.7 for third place, redshirt freshman Cole Johnson fin- ished fifth in 15:09.3, redshirt junior Devin Meyrer nailed down eighth in 15:12.8 and redshirt senior Ben Hill placed ninth in 15.13.1. Event to Watch: Big Ten Preview The eight-kilometer race is Sept. 28 at Ohio State. Women's Cross Country National Ranking: No. 4 MVP: Freshman Ericka VanderLende On Aug. 30, VanderLende backed up her ranking as the nation's best high school two-miler as a senior with a first overall finish in 16:57.3 in the 5,000-ki- lometer event, the second-best time in Michigan Open meet history. Only former Wolverine and multiple-time All-American Erin Finn's 16:44.6 perfor- mance in 2016 was better than Vander- Lende's debut. Notes: Six other Michigan runners placed in the top 10, five of them break- ing the 18-minute mark. Senior Anna West finished second in 17:19.5, red- shirt junior Maddy Trevisan placed third in 17:23.3, redshirt senior Kayla Keane took fourth in 17.37.8, redshirt sopho- more Camille Davre posted a 17:40.6 to grab sixth place and redshirt sopho- more Alice Hill earned eighth place with a time of 17:49.5. Emma Sloan, a grad transfer from Brown, barely missed a sub 18-minute finish, clocking a 18:00.2 for 10th. Event to Watch: Big Ten Preview The six-kilometer race takes place Sept. 28 at Ohio State. Field Hockey Overall Record: 4-2, 0-0 Big Ten National ranking: No. 11 Best Win: 3-2 over No. 3 Connecticut Sept. 13 in Ann Arbor After falling to No. 1 North Carolina 4-2, beating No. 10 Wake Forest 3-0 and losing 3-2 in a shootout at No. 21 Stanford, U-M knocked off the third- ranked Huskies at home with two sec- ond-quarter goals and an insurance score late in the final period. It was the Wolverines' first win over Connecticut since 2005. Co-MVPs: Senior midfielder/for- ward Meg Dowthwaite and sopho- more midfielder Kathryn Peterson The pair of Wolverines have domi- nated the scoresheet through six games. Dowthwaite has 25 shots, four goals and one assist, while Peterson has three goals (in just five shots) and four assists for a team-high 10 points. Player To Watch: Freshman forward Tina D'Anjolell D'Anjolell had a goal in each game of the Wolverines' California swing against Stanford and Cal, and is tied for third on the team with five points (two goals and one assist). Must-See Game: Oct. 6 vs. Michigan State The Wolverines welcome their in-state rival to Ann Arbor for a Maize Out and 4 p.m. tilt carried on Big Ten Network. Men's Soccer Overall Record: 2-2-1, 0-0 Big Ten National ranking: Unranked Best win: 3-1 over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Sept. 2 In his first career start after sitting out his freshman season with an in- jury, sophomore Derick Broche scored a pair of goals in Michigan's 3-1 victory over Southern Illinois University Ed- wardsville. Grauate transfer Nebojsa Popovic bagged the go-ahead goal for the Wolverines in the 87th minute, his first game-winner wearing maize and blue. MVP: Senior forward Nebojsa Popovic In addition to his game-winner against SIUE, the graduate transfer from Oak- land scored a goal and added an assist Sept. 6 against Cornell, after notching his first Michigan score against Florida Gulf Coast Aug. 30.   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Michigan's Fall Teams Are Enjoying Early Success Rookie Ericka VanderLende debuted with a 16:57.3 in the 5,000-kilometer Michigan Open, the second-best time in the meet's history.
