Penn State and Rutgers have some history. During the Nittany Lions' 2015 national
championship season, the Scarlet Knights were one of only three teams to beat them,
and the Knights did it again the following year, bouncing PSU from the Big Ten tour-
nament with a 2-0 win. In 2017, it was PSU that eliminated Rutgers from the league
tourney, and the Lions also took a regular-season game from their border rivals last
season. This year's meeting should add to the luster of one of the Big Ten's better ri-
valries. As of early September, the Scarlet Knights were one of three Big Ten teams in
the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25, leaping into the poll at the No. 21 spot a
