14 SEPT. 30, 2019 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME THE BIG PICTURE A "RUTHIAN" CAREER Former Notre Dame three-time All-American Ruth Riley Hunter was feted by the school for her induction into the 2019 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame at the home football game versus New Mexico Sept. 14. In the history of women's basketball, Riley is one of the select few players who have been named Finals MVP at both the NCAA and WNBA levels, while achieving the rare triple play of an NCAA title (2001), WNBA title (2003 and 2006) and an Olympic gold medal (2004). The 2001 Naismith Player of the Year spearheaded the Fighting Irish to their first national title that season, converting the game-win- ning free throws with 5.8 seconds left in the national title matchup with Purdue and earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the Final Four. She remains the lone player in school history to surpass 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds while in a Notre Dame uniform. Active in global humanity affairs, Riley in 2009 was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and in 2015 was awarded the Moose Krause Distinguished Service Award by the Notre Dame Monogram Club. PHOTO BY ANDRIS VISOCKIS
