SWEET 16
The Virginia men's soccer team
notched the 16th ACC title in program
history with a 3-1 triumph over top-
ranked Clemson Nov. 17. The Cavaliers
trailed at the half for just the second
time this season, but tallied three sec-
ond-half goals to turn away the Tigers.
"This trophy and this championship
are pretty difficult to win," UVA head
coach George Gelnovatch said. "The
only thing that's sweeter is the national
championship. It's really, really hard to
do, and I'm proud of not only winning it
but in the fashion that we did, coming
from behind. We showed a lot of char-
acter today."
The conference championship is
UVA's fifth under Gelnovatch (1997,
2003, 2004, 2009 and 2019). In his 24-
year tenure, the Cavaliers have reached
the ACC championship game 14 times.
A day after taking the ACC crown,
Virginia (17-1-1) was selected to be the
No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tourna-
ment for the second time in program
history and the first time under Gelno-
vatch. The Wahoos have now qualified
for 39 straight NCAA Tournaments, the
longest streak in the history of college
soccer.
