www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 7, 2019 37 GAME PREVIEW: BOWLING GREEN between the two programs, but clearly the success and momentum the Irish staff has built can't be matched by Bowling Green. Advantage: Notre Dame INTANGIBLES Statistics remain skewed through the early part of any season and reading too much into them can be a misleading endeavor, but a couple stand out for both Notre Dame and Bowling Green. For the Irish, the offensive line has not lived up to expectations so far — at least in the running game. Through the first three games, Notre Dame was converting only 29 percent of its third downs, which rated 112th in the country, and its time of possession ranked only 118th at 26:07 per game. Conversely, through four weeks this season, the Irish were one of only 12 teams in the country to score on all of their red-zone possessions. Notre Dame was 11 of 11 going into Virginia, with nine touchdowns and two field goals. When scanning the Bowling Green stat sheet, finding much to celebrate is an exercise in futility. Other than sacks and fewest penalties per game, the Falcons rank in the bottom half nationally of every other statistical category. Add the obvious home-field advantage that Kelly and his staff have built, and Notre Dame easily sweeps the advantage list against the Falcons. Advantage: Notre Dame Senior strong safety Jerry McBride finished sec- ond on the team in tackles last year with 106 and is one of the Bowling Green defense's anchors under first-year coordinator Brian VanGorder.
