Both of those foes captured their re- spective conferences and met in the Rose Bowl, with Michigan winning to finish No. 4 while USC placed No. 7. That season the Irish also vanquished reigning national champ Miami, which finished No. 2, and then 11-0 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl, with the Mountaineers placing No. 5 in the final poll. • Two more white-knuckle classics in 1989 featured another No. 1 ver- sus No. 2 battle when Notre Dame first won in Ann Arbor (24-19) on the strength of 88- and 92-yard kickoff re- turns by Raghib "Rocket" Ismail. Then in the midst of the 23-game winning streak, the Irish had to rally from a 17-7 halftime deficit and make a late goal- line stand to defeat USC 28-24 while overcoming five turnovers. This time, it was the Trojans who defeated the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl, while 12-1 Notre Dame finished No. 2. • In 1990, Notre Dame came back from a 24-14 margin against No. 5 Michigan in the opener with a similar 11th-hour 28-24 win as it did versus USC the previous season. The Irish also had a four-point win at USC (10-6) in the regular-season finale that gave the team a chance to play for the title versus No. 1 Colorado in the Orange Bowl, which it lost (10-9). 1993: ANOTHER NEAR MISS Almost a double-digit underdog in game two at Michigan, the Fighting Irish propelled themselves back into the national title hunt with a 27-23 con- quest in Ann Arbor, and the following month handled a reeling USC program with relative ease in a 31-13 win. Quarterback Kevin McDougal was the standout in the win at Michigan, while backup Paul Failla replaced the injured McDougal versus the Trojans. Just like in 1989, though, Notre Dame finished No. 2 despite having defeated national champion Florida State in November (31-24). 2012: 12-0 IN '12 Not only was this Notre Dame's first unbeaten regular season in 24 years, but also the first time in 14 previous tries from 1994-2011 it con- quered both Michigan (13-6) and USC (22-13), thus helping it place No. 1 and creating a matchup with Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. Forcing six Wolverine turnovers ended a three-game losing streak to them from 2009-11. In both contests, Notre Dame tallied only one touch- down while relying on its defense to carry the night. Alas, it would not be enough against the Crimson Tide. 2018: BOOKEND SCORES For the first time since winning the national title in 1973 while defeating Northwestern in the opener and Mi- ami in the regular-season finale by the same 44-0 scores, Notre Dame's run to the 2018 College Football Playoff was sparked by the same 24-17 outcomes — first against Michigan at home in the opener, and then at USC in the fi- nal regular season contest after falling behind 10-0. ✦ In 2012, linebacker Manti Te'o and Notre Dame capped their first sweep of Michigan and USC in two decades, and first unbeaten regular season in 24 years, with a 22-13 win over the Trojans in Los Angeles.
