His play against USC will not gar- ner the headlines that some other quarterbacks might get the morning after a rivalry game, but his clutch performance in the fourth quarter helped Notre Dame win the game. The final drive of the game for the Irish was a 75-yard, 14-play effort that took just less than seven minutes off the clock. Book was 2-of-2 passing for 21 yards and also ran the ball five times for 28 yards, including the final eight for a Notre Dame touchdown. He was in complete and total control for the entire drive, and showed why the coaching staff has so much confi- dence in him. Book completed only 53.1 percent of his passes during the night and missed some wide-open receivers on his way to 165 yards in the air and one touchdown (to junior tight end Cole Kmet). Still, he excelled on the first scoring drive of the game while taking advantage of the one-on-one coverage across the board.
