www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 2, 2019 61 Believe it or not, it took 58 years be- fore that feat was matched at Notre Dame. Sophomore Bob Thomas did the honors in the 16-0 victory versus North Carolina on Oct. 16, 1971, with his three makes in as many attempts from 28, 27 and 24 yards. Thomas went on to hit the field goal trifecta in a game three more times: 1972 versus Northwestern (23, 26 and 47), 1972 against Michigan State (47, 24 and 26) and 1973 versus USC (32, 33 and 32 yards). In addition to the aforementioned 1977 Michigan State game by Reeve, he made three that same season for the national champions during a 43-10 win versus Navy. But none was longer than 34 yards. In 1978, Chuck Male became the fourth Notre Dame kicker to convert three in a game during a 31-14 win at home versus Tennessee, but none was longer than 37 yards. Male then opened the 1979 cam- paign by becoming the first Fighting Irish kicker ever to make four field goals (in as many attempts) in a game when Notre Dame won at Michigan, 12-10. The four were from 40, 44, 22 and 39 yards. The latter was one yard short of joining the "Three From 40 Yards Or More" fraternity. THREE-POINT PLAYS AND NOTES • Following his epic 51-yard game- winner as time expired versus Michi- gan in 1980, Harry Oliver had back- to-back outputs of four field goals in wins versus Michigan State (26-21) and Miami (32-14). Only one was from lon- ger than 40 yards (44 at MSU). • Mike Johnston earned a scholar- ship in the 1982 opener when his three field goals (35, 37 and 41) helped defeat Michigan 23-17. He had three apiece that same season in victories versus Michigan State and Miami, with 42 the longest among those six makes. • From 1984-86, John Carney had nine games where he converted at least three field goals, but never had more than two kicks in the same game from 40 or more yards. • Reggie Ho opened the 1988 season with his magnificent 4 of 4 field goals versus Michigan (31, 38, 26 and 26) to begin the program's most recent march to the national title. • In the 29-20 win versus No. 2 Mi- ami in 1990, Craig Hentrich was the first Fighting Irish kicker to tally five field goals in a game: 25, 44, 34, 36 and 35 yards. • Nicholas Setta booted five field goals in the 2002 opener versus Mary- land: 51, 32, 18, 46 and 24 yards, and five again in the 2003 opener won in overtime versus Washington State, with two of them from at least 40 yards. • In the Brian Kelly era, David Ruffer, Kyle Brindza and Yoon all etched their names into the Notre Dame record books with field goal proficiency, but none made three kicks from beyond 40 yards in a game as Doerer did. ✦ John Carney had nine games at Notre Dame from 1984-86 in which he converted at least three field goals, and today he is still the No. 5 all-time scorer in NFL history with 2,062 points after playing more than two decades.
