12 NOV. 23, 2019 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Sammie Fisher — Soccer The junior from Simi Valley, Calif., was named a third-team All-ACC selec- tion. Playing between mid- field and forward, she started every game and achieved ca- reer-high marks while lead- ing the team in goals (six) and points (16), and tying for the team lead in assists (four). Fisher notched her first career hat trick, and the first for the Irish since 2013, at Miami Oct. 10 by tallying all three goals in the second half to equal a school record. Eva Hurm — Soccer The junior from Upper Saddle River, N.J., also was named third-team All- ACC. She led all Irish forwards with 17 starts and paced the team with three game-winning goals. She also was second on the squad with career highs in goals (five) and points (13). Hurm, whose previous ca- reer highs were three goals and eight points as a sophomore last year, was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team. Jack Lynn — Soccer The sophomore from St. Louis was tabbed as a second-team All-ACC per- former. After scoring three goals as a freshman in 2018, Lynn broke out to lead Notre Dame with nine markers this season. Five of the nine tal- lies were game-winners, which led the ACC and ranked eighth in the country as of mid-November. Lynn's teammate Felician Dumas, a graduate student from Tokyo who split time between the defense and midfield positions, was named third-team All-ACC. Cale Morris — Hockey The senior goaltender from Larkspur, Colo., picked up a pair of victories in Notre Dame's sweep of Ohio State Nov. 8-9. He notched 25 saves in a 3-2 overtime win in the opener and then stopped 24 shots in a 2-1 triumph the fol- lowing evening. In the process, he became the fifth Irish goaltender to notch 50 career wins. Morris currently stands at 50-21-5, which ranks fifth on the school's all-time wins list. TOP OF THE CLASS ✦ GIMME FIVE With his career-high 139 rushing yards in the 38-7 victory at Duke Nov. 9, senior quarterback Ian Book raised his season ground total to 390 yards (43.3 yards per game). Over a 13-game season, and if he stays healthy, that would translate to 563 yards and make him only the fourth different Notre Dame quarterback to eclipse 500 rushing yards in a season. It would also make Book the fifth Fighting Irish quarterback to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in his career. He was at 877 entering the contest versus Navy Nov. 16. So many have come close to the 1,000-yard mark in their career. Paul Hornung (1955-56) could have easily made it had there been 12- game schedules back then, but still rushed for 892 yards at quarterback. Carlyle Holiday (898 from 2001-02), Jarious Jackson (967 from 1997-99) and DeShone Kizer (997 from 2015-16) also came so close. Here are the top five career rushers at quar- terback for Notre Dame, including bowl games from past eras just like now: Rk. Player (Years) Career Rushing Yards 1. Tony Rice (1987-89) 2,049 2. Brandon Wimbush (2015-18) 1,156 3. Tom Clements (1972-74) 1,148 4. Joe Theismann (1968-70) 1,091 5. DeShone Kizer (2015-16) 997 CHARTING THE IRISH DRESSED FOR SUCCESS Few aspects of a college football team are more important to a program's identity than its uniforms. Notre Dame is, of course, world-renowned for its gold helmets and Ohio State is famous for awarding white and green buckeye leaf stickers for their players to put on their head protectors. College football uniforms are so important that Athlon Sports put together a list of the top 25 for 2019. The Fighting Irish appeared at No. 2, smack dab in the middle of two of the team's most popular rivals. The Michigan Wolverines, with their maize- and-blue-winged helmets, were given the top spot in the rankings. Coming in at No. 3 were the USC Trojans. Notre Dame played both teams this year. Several other 2019 and 2020 Irish opponents also made the top 25. Georgia, which handed Notre Dame its first loss of the season, came in at No. 9. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech and Navy rounded out the bottom of the list, with the Hokies appearing No. 20 and the Midshipmen No. 25. In 2020, the Fighting Irish have Pittsburgh and Clemson on their schedule. The Panthers are No. 17 and the Tigers are No. 18. MOVING?
