T H E M O N T H I N . . . "Other guys stepped up, coaches stepped up," Franklin said after the game [against Indiana]. "Did it morph us a little bit? Probably. But I don't know that it was necessarily because K.J. wasn't there or we were able to run the ball. I think obviously the depth that we have at the running back position has been helpful and the depth that we have at the receiver position has been helpful." Still, the Nittany Lions noticed that Hamler was not on the field. And they missed him. MIKE POORMAN STATECOLLEGE.COM We've got to get better [against opponents' passing attacks], there's no doubt about it. I will also say that [Indiana] has done that to everybody. I think they're leading the conference in passing. They have one of the best passing offenses in the country. ... Can we get better there? There's no doubt about it. Obviously, we'll work on that a great deal. But again, the most important stat is that we found a way to get a win. At- tended by 335 guests, the dinner raised more than $287,600 for endowed schol- arships. Franklin celebrated the recognition with his wife, Fumi, and their two daughters, Shola and Addy. "I want to thank university leadership, the Renaissance Board, and those who support this impactful initiative," Franklin said. "We are honored and humbled by this recognition. We are all here to support higher education and to create more opportunities for young people at Penn State. It's Fumi's and my goal to help make a positive impact on our community through opportunities such as this. We want to give back, make a di6erence, and be part of the solu- tions." Since his arrival at Penn State in 2014, Franklin has spoken frequently about his desire to instill a sense of community pride. "We are so grateful for all James has done for generations of students, fac- ulty, sta6 and alumni," said Penn State president Eric Barron. "His work ethic, integrity, humility and commitment to the welfare of others are a model for success on the football 5eld and in life – and the Franklin Family Renaissance Fund scholarship will allow us to con- tinue our heritage of providing access to education for academically strong stu- dents who demonstrate the highest need." Gi7s to the Franklin Family Renais- sance Fund will advance a fundraising campaign that has been dubbed A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Ex- cellence. The campaign seeks to elevate Penn State's position as a leading public uni- versity in a world de5ned by rapid change and global connections. ■
