M . / 8 P . M . | N O V . 2 9 / 3 0 | R E C H A L L | B T N The 9nal weekend of the Big Ten women's volleyball regular season is so consequen- tial that we couldn't narrow it down to just one match. The Nittany Lions will be fac- ing two of their most formidable conference adversaries on consecutive nights, with the Badgers visiting University Park for a Friday evening showdown, and the Golden Gophers following right on their heels. As of this writing, Wisconsin was ranked sev- enth in the AVCA poll, while Minnesota was 9;h. Penn State wasn't far behind, ranking eighth according to the coaches. The Badgers have been leading the Big Ten in hitting percentage for much of the season, thanks in large part to 6-foot-8 middle blocker Dana Rettke, who was hitting at a .399 clip to rank fourth in the conference. Rettke was also third in the conference in service aces with an average of .38 per set, while teammate Sydney Hilley was leading the league in assists at 12.08 per set. The Gophers were being paced by middle blocker Regan Pittman, the league leader in blocks (1.44 per set). Penn State has plenty of 9repower of its own, with sophomores Kaitlyn Hord and Jonni Parker leading the way. It should make for a raucous weekend in Rec Hall. –M.H. of the NCAA's top 9ve all-time win- ningest coaches and is in the top four in all-time NCAA tournament ap- pearances as a head coach. In their nonconference victory over Bucknell, the Lions had a 17-1 edge in shots and a 6-1 penalty corner ad- vantage, but they weren't able to pull away until late in the game. Abby Meyers, Jemma Punch and Grace Wallace scored fourth-period goals, while goalkeeper Brie Barraco made one save. The victory turned out to be the start of a late-season surge by Penn State. The Nittany Lions wrapped up their regular season with a 2-1 win over Rutgers, then reached the cham- pionship game of the Big Ten tourna- ment with a 2-1 victory over Michigan in the quarter9nals and a 1- 0 upset of second-ranked Maryland in the semi9nal round. The Lions, who were serving as tournament hosts, took Iowa to over- time in the 9nal on Nov. 7. But they saw their season end when Maddy Murphy scored o: a scramble in front of their cage just 23 seconds into the extra period. Murphy's goal gave the second-seeded Hawkeyes a 1-0 win and the conference's automatic NCAA tournament bid. Penn State outshot Iowa, 6-5, but the Hawkeyes had the only shots from the third period on. Barraco had two saves for the Lions, who ended their season at 8-12 and 4-4 in Big Ten play. "Our best hockey was this weekend, and I'm very proud of how the team competed," Morett-Curtiss said. "We had some great momentum going into the tournament and continued it throughout the tournament. I thought our leadership was great on the 9eld; Maddie Morano and Madi- son Hutson really put the team on their backs at di:erent times. Anna Simon played well, Abby Myers played well and Brie Barraco had a great weekend as well. This team played so well together. It made me proud to see them grow together as a team and perform so well." ■
