The University of Michigan Athletics Hall of Honor officially inducted seven new members Nov. 15: Erick Anderson (football, 1989-92), Hal Downes (ice hockey, 1950-51), John Fisher (wrestling, 1985-89), Lara Hooiveld (women's swimming and diving, 1992-94), Ron Simpkins (football, 1976-79), Stacey Thomas (women's basketball, 1997-2000) and Nick Willis (men's track and field, cross country, 2003-05). Anderson was a 1991 All-American, Big Ten co-De- fensive Player of the Year, Butkus Award winner as the nation's top linebacker and team co-captain that went on to play three seasons in the NFL. He notched at least 100 tackles all four years of his U-M career and is the only player in program history to lead the way in the category four times. Downes played just a single year in Ann Arbor, but it was a memorable one that included a 19-save perfor- mance while helping the squad win the national title. The All-American earned Frozen Four All-Tournament honors, but less than a year later was called to serve his country in the Korean War. In 1952, his B-26 Invader went down after the engines stopped working and he was declared MIA.
