JANUARY 2020 THE WOLVERINE 25 Michigan holds a 4-1 record in the Citrus Bowl, first appearing in the game in 1999. Here are details of the Wolverines' five previous appearances: Michigan 45, Arkansas 31 Jan. 1, 1999 Michigan finished the 1998 season as co-Big Ten champions with Ohio State after losing in Columbus and faced a 9-2 Arkansas team. The Wolverines trailed 31-24 with only 5:49 remaining in the game be- fore running back Anthony Thomas scored on a two-yard run to tie it. The defense held, and Tom Brady found wide receiver DiAllo Johnson from 21 yards out with 2:25 remaining for the game-winning score. Cornerback James Whitley provided the exclama- tion point with a 26-yard pick-six with 1:47 left. Thomas earned MVP honors after rushing for 139 yards and three scores for the Wolverines. Michigan 31, Auburn 28 Jan. 1, 2001 The Wolverines captured their fourth straight bowl game win in handling the Tigers behind another big perfor- mance from Thomas, then a senior. Au- burn players said in the pregame they were looking forward to the matchup given their "team speed" advantage, but Thomas ran through and around the Tigers' defense. U-M scored first on a 31-yard flea flicker from quarterback Drew Hen- son to David Terrell. Auburn scored the next two touchdowns, but the Wolver- ines answered with three straight to take a 28-14 lead in the third quarter, holding on for the victory. Thomas earned MVP honors and became U-M's all-time leading rusher with 182 yards and two scores, while Henson completed 15 of 20 passes for 294 yards with two touchdowns in what would be his last game in a Michigan uniform. Tennessee 45, Michigan 17 Jan. 1, 2002 An upset loss to LSU in the SEC Championship G ame k nocked a loaded Volunteers team to the Citrus Bowl, where they were heavily favored. Tennessee lived up to its billing as one of the nation's top teams, scoring the first 17 points and dominating via the passing game, finishing with 406 yards through the air. Michigan trailed 24-10 at the break, but the Volunteers scored the next three touchdowns to blow it open. John Navarre threw for 240 yards and B.J. Askew carried nine times for 71 yards as two of the only bright spots in the lopsided loss. Michigan 41, Florida 35 Jan. 1, 2008 Lloyd Carr's last outing as Michigan head coach proved to be one of the most exciting games of the 2007 cam- paign's bowl season. The 9-3 Wolverines suffered through a stunning opening-day loss to Appa- lachian State and a home blowout to Oregon before righting the ship with a win over Notre Dame, but injuries to quarterback Chad Henne and Mike Hart played roles in a 14-3 loss to Ohio State. Finally healthy, the Wolverines stunned the Gators with an aerial at- tack that featured a 25-of-39, 373-yard, three-touchdown passing performance from Henne, who outdueled Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Wide re- ceiver Adrian Arrington notched ca- reer highs with nine receptions for 153 yards and two scores in the win. Michigan 41, Florida 7 Jan. 1, 2016 Jim Harbaugh's first bowl game as head coach was a Michigan blowout. The Wolverines treated it like a busi- ness trip and dominated behind quar- terback Jake Rudock, who finished 20- of-31 passing for 278 yards with three touchdowns in the win and became the second Michigan quarterback to eclipse 3,000 passing yards in a season with his performance. Wide receiver Jehu Chesson caught five passes for 118 yards and a score, while running back De'Veon Smith carried 25 times for 109 yards. The Michigan defense allowed Florida only 273 total yards. — Chris Balas Michigan allowed former head coach Lloyd Carr to end his career with a win when the Wolverines toppped Florida, 41-35, in the Citrus Bowl (then technically called the Capital One Bowl) on Jan. 1, 2008.
