32 JANUARY 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED Aug. 31: No. 21 Iowa State 29, Northern Iowa 26 The Cyclones barely squeaked out a triple-overtime victory over their in- state foe from the Football Championship Subdivision, despite outgaining them 463-262 in total yardage. Down three in the third overtime period, sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy saved the game when fifth-year senior running back Sheldon Croney Jr. fumbled the ball on the 1-yard line. Purdy quickly jumped on it and then Croney ran the ball across the goal line on the next play to give the Cyclones the win. Sept. 14: No. 19 Iowa 18, Iowa State 17 The Cyclones went into the fourth quarter with a 14-9 lead, but couldn't hold on and fell behind on a Hawkeyes' field goal in the last five minutes of the game. Purdy threw for 276 yards and touchdown in this contest, but Iowa State never established a run game, compiling just 91 yards. Redshirt sophomore Tarique Milton led all receivers with 144 yards and one touchdown on eight re- ceptions. Senior wide receiver Deshaunte Jones also threw a touchdown pass. Sept. 21: Iowa State 72, Louisiana-Monroe 20 Purdy produced 510 yards of total offense and six touchdowns (three on the ground and three through the air) as the Cyclones showed no mercy on the Warhawks. Purdy connected with Milton for a 73-yard score, then com- bined with Jones on an 84-yarder. Sept. 28: Baylor 23, Iowa State 21 Iowa State opened Big 12 play with a heartbreak in a game where it was getting blown out until it scored 21 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead with 3:45 left on the clock. However, the Bears re- sponded and converted a field goal with 21 seconds left to earn the victory. Purdy had another strong performance, throwing for 342 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Oct. 5: Iowa State 49, TCU 24 This game got out of hand quickly and the score was 35-10 heading into the fourth quarter. Purdy accounted for 349 of Iowa State's 436 total yards, and tallied four touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore running back Johnnie Lang chipped in 72 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Oct. 12: Iowa State 38, West Virginia 14 Tied 14-14 at the end of the second quarter, the Cyclones pulled away in the second half, scoring 24 unanswered points. This was a breakout game for freshman running back Breece Hall. On 26 rushing attempts, he ran for 132 yards and three touchdowns. Oct. 19: Iowa State 34, Texas Tech 24 Purdy completed 23 of 32 passes for 378 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, while Hall got it done on the ground again with 183 rushing yards and two scores on 19 carries. He had a long run of 75 yards, and the Iowa State offense averaged 10 yards per play. While the Cyclones were in control for a majority of the game, they still allowed the Red Raiders' offense to eclipse 400 total yards. Oct. 26: Oklahoma State 34, No. 23 Iowa State 27 The Cyclones outgained the Cowboys by 66 yards, but Purdy struggled with turnovers, tossing three interceptions in the second half. One pick was returned for an Oklahoma State touchdown. Still, Purdy threw for 382 yards with a touchdown, and Jones (91), red- shirt sophomore tight end Charlie Kolar (88) and fifth-year senior wideout La'Michael Pettway (63) each had at least 60 receiving yards and seven receptions. Nov. 10: No. 9 Oklahoma 42, Iowa State 41 The game ended with Purdy throwing an interception on a two-point conversion attempt with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Cyclones were actually down 42-21 heading into the fourth quarter and scored the final 20 points of the game. Head coach Matt Campbell opted to go for the win, rather than send the game to overtime. Iowa State allowed Oklahoma to gain an average of 7.4 yards per play, but what especially hurt the Cyclones was the 11 penalties that cost them 84 yards. Purdy completed 19 of 30 passes for 282 yards with five touchdowns, and Hall ran for 110 yards on 18 attempts. Nov. 16: Iowa State 23, No. 19 Texas 21 The Cyclones won on a 36-yard field goal by redshirt junior kicker Connor Assalley that went through the uprights as time expired. Purdy had another monster game, completing 30 of 48 throws for 354 yards with two scores and a pick. Both Jones (144) and Pettway (100) had at least 100 receiving yards. Hall also crossed the century mark with 101 yards on 24 rushing attempts. Nov. 23: No. 22 Iowa State 41, Kansas 31 The Cyclones were down to the Jayhawks 31-27 with 10:42 left in the fourth quarter, but Purdy responded with back-to-back touchdowns to give Iowa State the 10-point victory. The Iowa State defense allowed a poor Kansas team to accumulate nearly 500 yards of total offense and didn't force a single turnover. Still, Iowa State found a way to win with a 372-yard, four-touchdown performance through the air by Purdy. Nov. 30: Kansas State 27, No. 23 Iowa State 17 Despite the Cyclones' defense allowing just 57 passing yards and 288 yards total offense, Iowa State fell to the Wildcats by 10 points, the team's largest margin of defeat this season. Redshirt freshman defensive end Will McDon- ald had the lone two Cyclone sacks of the contest. The issue was Iowa State also had its lowest offensive output of the season, gaining a total of 236 yards and converting on third down just once out of 13 chances. Purdy completed 15 of 30 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown.
