The NHL QUINN HUGHES IN THE MIDST OF AN ALL-STAR ROOKIE CAMPAIGN Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes leads all NHL rookies with 29 assists, and checks in third among first-year players in points with 34. He was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, was lim- ited to just five games in 2018-19 and is the lone member from that year's class to already be named an all-star. "Hughes has an exceptionally high panic threshold where he's able to hang on to the puck, draw forecheck- ers and make plays under heavy pressure — an asset that opens up space for his teammates in transi- tion," Harman Dayal of The Athletic explained Jan. 20 while dubbing him the best player from the 2018 NHL draft so far. "Whether Hughes makes an outlet pass right away or carries the puck on his own, the constant is he always knows where his team- mates and the opposition are. He rarely skates himself into trouble. "The most impressive part, how- ever, is how rarely he makes an egre- gious error. His mature decision- making is a standout trait."
