The start of the NCAA's late signing period, for- merly known as National Signing Day, had no frills or drama for the Penn State football program. Instead, having signed 27 prospects on Dec. 18, the Nit- tany Lion coaching staff spent the final weeks of the 2020 recruiting cycle working to land a number of preferred run-ons while also turning their attention to the Class of 2021. But even though there wasn't much left to say about the 2020 class, James Franklin hadn't had a media availabil- ity in more than a month when sign- ing day arrived on Feb. 5. So he returned to the Beaver Stadium media room that day, along with three new members of his coaching staff: offensive coordinator Kirk Ciar- rocca, offensive line coach Phil Trautwein and receivers coach Taylor Stubblefield. Here's a look at what they discussed: COACHING FLUX There's been a lot of upheaval on the Nittany Lions' coach- ing staff since the end of the 2019 regu- lar season. It began with Ricky Rahne's departure to become head coach at Old Dominion and continued in late December when Penn State announced that it was not renewing Matt Limegrover's contract as of- fensive line coach. Then in early January, Gerad Parker left his job as wide receivers coach after only one season to become offen- sive coordinator at West Virginia. And at the end of the month, it was announced that defen- sive line coach Sean Spencer would be leaving to join the New York Giants' staff.
