Before heading out for spring break in mid-March, the Penn State football team had some business to take care of. Im- mersed in their eighth week of winter workouts, many players convened March 4 at the Lasch Building for max-outs on the squat. It was the 22nd lifting session of the winter, with the 23rd set to take place two days later. The payoff for all those sessions was readily apparent to strength and condi- tioning coach Dwight Galt. "The guys look phenomenal," Galt told reporters following the March 4 lift. "You guys know about our three tiers. I think they're more pronounced and different this year than they've been in the past. I really, really like the program that we did." Of the 108 participants, Galt iden- tified 23 as being "tier three," which is the top level at Penn State. Let's take a position-by-position look at some of the individual news, notes and observations to emerge from the session and Galt's interview afterward: QUARTERBACK Sean Clif- ford appeared at the lift but did not participate in the max squat, progressing in- stead through the warm-ups with the rest of the team be- fore breaking off to do arm work and cheer on his team- mates who were completing the testing. That did not prevent Galt from singing the praises of Clifford and backup Will Levis. "Both of those guys are phenomenal," he said. "They're right at the top of any lists we talk about." Levis had a 340-pound power clean, a 10-pound improvement since last summer. Clifford, meanwhile, benched 350 pounds, matching his mark at the top of the QB board in Penn State's 2018 winter workouts.
