APRIL 2020 THE WOLVERINE 29   MICHIGAN BASKETBALL with Jon Teske and Zavier Simpson. Instead, Davis was among those say- ing goodbye to the seniors while pre- paring for a fifth year. He's going to begin work on a master's degree, and physical therapy and anatomy are options. On the court, he's continued to thrive through adversity. "There have definitely been some discouraging times," Davis admit- ted. "My teammates have been ex- tremely supportive. I've really relied on them to keep my spirits up, and they've gotten me through a lot. A lot of credit has to go to them and then my family as well. "It's definitely been a transition. Obviously, I haven't had anything like a role like that in the past, but I just tried my best to step in and do what my team needed of me." There was no "light bulb moment," he said — more a gradual process of earning his playing time — and his constant effort in practice and im- proved defense (though he still has a way to go) have put him in position for an even better performance in his fifth year. — Chris Balas THIRD FAB FIVER PAYS HOWARD A VISIT Michigan's Senior Night March 5 featured some special visitors. For- mer U-M head coach John Beilein was in the stands to see seniors Jon Teske and Zavier Simpson, two play- ers he brought to U-M, in their last home game as Wolverines, staying until both left the court for the last time to standing ovations. On the other side of the court, for- mer Fab Five member and Juwan Howard teammate Ray Jackson re- ceived an ovation of his own when shown on the big screen. Jackson became the third Fab Fiver to support U-M's first-year head coach in person. Jalen Rose saw U-M at Rutgers and Jimmy King has been to a number of home games — all but Chris Webber have seen the Wolver- ines live this year. "Oh wow — Ray surprised me to- day," Howard said with a grin after- wards. "Someone just knocked on my [office] door really hard. I'm pre- paring to get game prep, and all of a sudden, [administrative assistant] Lisa [Nicholson] barged in the door, and who's walking in behind her? "'What's up, baby?!' That's how he said it. And to see Ray, man, I just jumped out of my chair and I was so happy. I'm still happy, because Ray and I, we've been through a lot. Our college experience was beauti- ful, and he was one of my favorite teammates. "I've enjoyed the brotherhood that we shared. I enjoy the relationship we've embarked on and the families that we've created. His family and my family, to come here the last reg- ular-season home game and surprise me like that, I told him, 'I'm getting too old for that now! I don't need a heart attack!'" Jackson stayed all four years at U-M and averaged 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, while shooting 49.3 percent in 125 games played. He and his team- mates played in back-to-back na- tional championship games his first two seasons (1992-93) and made the Elite Eight the following year minus Webber. — Chris Balas DID YOU KNOW...
