10 THE WOLVERINE APRIL 2020   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN ATHLETICS TAKES STEPS TO PREVENT FURTHER OUTBREAK OF CORONAVIRUS Prior to the coronavirus outbreak shutting down all sport- ing events and other large-scale events throughout the nation, Michigan athletics announced March 11 that the 2020 football spring game — scheduled for April 18 — was cancelled. The school also announced several other changes to procedures surrounding athletics events that will take place "at least" through April 21. That initial plan called for all U-M home competitions to be played as scheduled with only student-athletes, coaches, officials, essential personnel and a limit of two family mem- bers per participant in attendance. Credentialed media and broadcast partners were to be accommodated at games and encouraged to utilize social distancing, but that all changed March 12 when the shutdown occurred. There also are implications on recruiting for coaches and prospects alike. "For the health and safety of all involved, Michigan will not be allowing coaches to conduct off-campus recruiting ac- tivities or host recruits on official or unofficial campus visits during this time period," said a U-M statement. TWO MICHIGAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STANDOUTS NAMED ALL-BIG TEN Two Wolverines were awarded Big Ten honors following the end of the regular season. Sophomore forward Naz Hill- mon was a unanimous selection for first-team All-Big Ten, by the conference's coaches and media. Sophomore guard Amy Dilk was awarded All-Big Ten second-team honors from the coaches and named honorable mention by the media. Hillmon has now been named first-team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year, joining just two others, Katelynn Flaherty and Hallie Thorne, in program history to garner such recognition. In 32 games this season, Hillmon averaged 17.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. She was fifth in the conference in points per game, third in rebounds per game and second in field goal percentage (56.7). She had 11 double-doubles this season and 27 double-figure scoring games. Dilk averaged 11.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. She ranked fifth in the Big Ten in assists per game and third in minutes played, averaging 34.6 minutes per game. U-M finished with a record of 21-11 after it won two games in the Big Ten Tournament to advance to the semifinals, be- fore falling to Ohio State. Like the men, their presumptive trip to the NCAA Tournament was cancelled. JUMBO ELLIOTT SELECTED TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME Former U-M football offensive lineman John "Jumbo" Elliott was named to the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020, as announced March 11. Elliott is the 32nd U-M player to be selected for the College Football Hall of Fame. Elliott played for U-M from 1984-87, where he helped lead the Wolverines to the 1986 Big Ten title. He was selected as an All-American and first-team All-Big Ten for each of the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He is one of 22 U-M players to be first-team All-America at least twice. Running back Jamie Morris rushed for 1,000 yards or more in three straight sea- sons, running behind an Elliot-led line each year. Elliott was drafted in the second round with the 36th overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He played 14 years in the NFL, including his first eight sea- sons with the Giants. He was a starter on the Giants' Super Bowl XXV champion team. Elliott then played for the New York Jets from 1996-2000, and again in 2002. Elliott will be inducted in New York City on Dec. 8, 2020, at the National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner. ASHLEY KIM WINS BACK-TO-BACK BIG TEN GOLFER OF THE WEEK AWARDS U-M junior women's golfer Ashley Kim won back-to-back Big Ten Golfer of the Week awards, receiving the honor March 4 and March 11. Kim started the season strong, aver- aging a career-low score of 72.67 per round. Kim earned her first collegiate win, sharing top medalist honors with Oklahoma State's Maja Stark, with a 1-under-par 215 at the Hurricane Invitational March 2-3 in Coral Gables, Fla. She became the 20th U-M golfer in history to win an event, and was the first to earn top honors at an event in nearly three seasons. The next week, Kim put up a 3-over 213 at the Gators Invi- tational March 7-8. She finished third in the tournament, and posted her third straight top-10 finish. — Clayton Sayfie John "Jumbo" Elliott became the 32nd U-M player to be elected into the College Football Hall of Fame.
