www.BLUEANDGOLD.com MAY 2020 13 UNDER THE DOME 45 Years Ago: May 3, 1975 With only one starter returning on offense and the top two new quarterback candidates, Frank Allocco (separated shoulder) and Rick Slager (bruised ribs) injured, first-year head coach Dan Devine and his staff turn to two freshmen and former Parade All-Americans at quarterback in the annual Blue-Gold Game. Starting for the No. 1 Blue team, Gary Forystek leads a 10-3 halftime advantage over the Gold, quar- terbacked by Joe Montana, who misses his first nine pass attempts. In the second half, Montana is inserted with the Blue starters, and he rifles a perfect 33-yard touch- down toss to converted QB Ted Burgmeier, a 58-yard score to running back Mark McLane and a nine- yard tally to tight end Ken MacAfee. A fourth TD march is capped by a five-yard run by Art Best in the 38-6 win. Montana completes 7 of 12 passes for 138 yards with three scores for the first unit. 40 Years Ago: May 3, 1980 Cincinnati Moeller High head coach Gerry Faust is in attendance to watch five of his former players in the Blue-Gold Game: All-American linebacker Bob Crable, wide receivers Tony Hunter and Dave Condeni, quarterback Tim Koegel and kicker Harry Oliver (a sixth, linebacker Rick Naylor, will enroll in the fall). Prior to the game, Faust visits the Grotto and lights candles for his family, parents and a third with a promise that if he becomes the head coach at Notre Dame, he will visit the Grotto every day he is in town. Three weeks later, Faust receives a call from Notre Dame executive vice president Rev. Ned Joyce, C.S.C., who requests a private audience with him in Cincinnati. In the meeting, Joyce reveals that cur- rent head coach Dan Devine will be stepping down after the 1980 season, and asks Faust — with a 161-17-2 record at the nation's top high school program — if he would be interested in the position. When Faust answers it is his dream, Joyce tells him to keep the conversation confidential while he stays in touch with him. 20 Years Ago: May 1, 2000 Following Notre Dame's 5-7 record in 1999 and a sixth straight season finishing outside the top 10, Sports Illustrated runs an extensive cover feature asking: Whatever happened to Notre Dame football? Author Tim Layden postulates that Notre Dame, especially with stringent admission standards, hasn't changed with the times the way the New York Yankees did when they and the Fighting Irish rose to power in the 1920s. "There is a feeling that while Notre Dame's football program is still significant, its aura is fading — as measured in sliding television ratings and mediocre results — and that once the magic is gone, it will be irretrievable," Layden wrote. 5 Years Ago: May 7, 2015 A little more than a week before his graduation, quarterback Everett Golson — who had partaken in all 15 Notre Dame spring practices the previous two months — announces he will use his fifth season as a graduate transfer at Florida State instead. As a 2012 sophomore, he started 10 of the 12 games during a 12-0 regular season before losing 42-14 to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. An academic transgres- sion resulted in temporary expulsion during the 2013 campaign, but he then returned and led Notre Dame to a 6-0 start in 2014 before the Irish sputtered to a 7-5 regular-season finish. He passed for 3,445 yards and 29 touch- downs in 2014, but also had 22 turnovers (14 interceptions and eight lost fumbles), was benched during the 49-14 loss to USC and saw Malik Zaire start in the 31-28 Music City Bowl win versus LSU. Zaire was named Music City Bowl MVP, but Golson also was rotated in regularly. With no assurance to start in 2015, Golson opts to transfer to Florida State to vie for the quarterback position vacated by Heisman Tro- phy winner Jameis Winston. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: May With no assurance he would be the starter at quar- terback over Malik Zaire (No. 8) in May 2015, Everett Golson (No. 5) announced his transfer to Florida State a week prior to graduation after hav- ing participated in all 15 spring practices.
