Davie County High had gotten out of class March 22, they had missed most of the Wolfpack's loss to Temple in the NCAA Tournament. Their mother filled them in on the details, and they began thinking about how they will one day play in the NCAA Tournament. "I got out of school, and my friend and I went out to his car and watched the game," Caleb Martin said. "They were struggling a little bit and it was hard to watch that game. They've always got next year and they fought hard, but it was too late." Cody Martin said they were able to watch NC State in the ACC Tournament on television, including wins over Virginia and Virginia Tech, before falling to Miami in the semifinals. The Martin twins also attended a handful of NC State home games at PNC Arena. The loss to Temple left a lasting impact. "I can't believe they lost because they were so good," Cody Martin said. "I think they still played hard. The shots just weren't falling I heard. You have to play hard every single possession, and the shots will come." Their own season ended somewhat B abruptly, too. Davie County finished 21-6, but got upset 74-66 by Charlotte (N.C.) Independence in the second round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. The loss was definitely an unexpected jolt in what has turned out to be their last game at Davie County. The Martin twins have elected to attend famed Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy next year. "You can never underestimate a team, no matter how much you are down or up," Caleb Martin said. "We were up 12 with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter. That has to say something. We had a big target on our back. They came right at us and ended up winning." The first order of offseason business for the Martin twins was playing in their last Dave Telep Carolina Challenge, March 23 at Raleigh Ravenscroft. Cody Martin displayed some strong drives to the basket as well as adept passing. He also knocked down the occasional three-pointer from the small forward position. Caleb Martin also looked good on his three-point shot and showed some nifty dribbling moves in one-on-one situations. Both players are long and active defenders, and got the chance to play in front of NC State head coach Mark Gottfried, who was in attendance watching his son, junior Cameron Gottfried from Raleigh Broughton. "I didn't even know he was here, but I looked in the corner and he was there," Caleb Martin said. Caleb and Cody Martin ended the Carolina Challenge playing against each other, though they only occasionally guarded each other. "They always put us against each other in the last game," Cody Martin said. "It's really competitive and you don't want him to do better than you. You want to try and show him out, but he wants to do the same thing. You can't take off a single play." The Martin twins, Virginia commit B.J. Stith (who is also going to attend Oak Hill Academy), High Point (N.C.) Wesleyan junior point guard JaQuel Richmond, Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict's junior point guard Jonathan Williams (Virginia Commonwealth commit), Wilmington (N.C.) Hoggard junior power forward Trevor Singleton, Wilson (N.C.) Greenfield School junior power forward Logan McLane and Winston-Salem Quality Education Academy junior center Ibrahima Diallo could be the core group for this year's impressive Team Loaded squad. Team Loaded defeated New Heights 6158 to win the Philly Jam Fest title April 28.
