AUGUST 2020 THE WOLVERINE 41   MICHIGAN RECRUITING does look like he has the capability of being a fairly athletic interior of- fensive lineman, but his foot speed simply has to progress. Overall, Cole is a smart kid with the potential to rise like brother, but it's dependent on how he develops. Right now, there are more questions than answers. 8. 2022 DT Deone Walker, Detroit Cass Tech — I'm honestly surprised Michigan put an offer on the table this early for him. Walker is all about projection right now. He measured in at a whopping 6-6, 305 pounds, so his size is obviously intriguing. But he's carrying a noticeable amount of bad weight and looks sloppy from a technical standpoint. He also got winded easily and struggled moving around. Walker did have some better reps towards the end of the camp and, again, he is huge. A huge ball of clay, I would say. 9. 2022 DE Davonte Miles, River Rouge (Mich.) High — I liked the shoes he wore, and he was a good interview. Other than that, it was a pretty rough day for Miles. He looked awkward running the 40 and didn't move around well going through preliminary drills. He has slow feet and just looks, well, slow in general. Miles didn't finish the camp due to dehydration. I need to go and watch his tape be- cause this camp performance left a lot to be desired. 10. 2022 WR Tay'Shawn Trent, Detroit Eastpointe — There really wasn't much to evaluate here. Trent hurt his hip while running the 40 and sat out the entire camp. He might not be 6-4, like he's listed, but he's an intriguing big-bod- ied wide out. The camp obviously provided an incomplete evaluation. TWO MICHIGAN COMMITS NAMED ALL-AMERICANS MaxPreps released its 2020 pre- season high school All-America foot- ball teams in July, and two Michigan commits were featured on the list. Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's kicker/ pun ter commit Tommy Doman received first-team All- America honors as a punter. An Adidas All-American, Doman committed to Michigan over offers from Air Force, Boston College, Colo- rado State, Navy, Washington State and Western Michigan in early April. Jamie Kohl, camp director of Kohl's Professional Camps, which ranks and evaluates specialists had this to say about Doman: "He is a long, athletic prospect. His punting consistency might be the best in the country. Doman has great hands and is more technically polished than anyone else in the 2021 class. "He makes field goals look easy and won the kickoff competition at the Underclassman Challenge. Doman is currently the best overall combo K/P in the 2021 class and is a D1 scholarship player." Doman is ranked by Kohl's as the No. 3 kicker and No. 4 punter nation- ally. Rivals100 Michigan quarterback pledge J.J. McCarthy was tabbed a second-team All-American after throwing for more than 6,300 yards and 71 touchdowns during his last two seasons at La Grange Park (Ill.) Nazareth Academy. The four-star transferred to na- tional powerhouse Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy this offseason. Ex- pectations for McCarthy, the No. 5 ranked pro-style quarterback and No. 33 overall prospect nationally, are sky high at IMG Academy, which is the preseason No. 1-ranked team in the country by MaxPreps. NEW 2022 OFFERS GO OUT Michigan is almost done with its 2021 recruiting class. The Wolverines had 20 commitments as of late July, and only limited spots remain. This has allowed the Michigan staff to really focus on evaluating pros- pects for the next cycle. With the on- going pandemic, the coaches have watched plenty of film and sent out a handful of offers to prospects in the 2022 recruiting class. U-M running backs coach Jay Har- baugh was especially active, dishing out offers to a pair of four-star ball carriers in Suffolk (Va.) Nansemond Academy's George Pettaway and Klein (Texas) Cain's Jaydon Blue. Blue rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sopho- more and also ran a 10.79 in the 100 meters. He plays on the same club seven-on-seven team as 2021 Michi- gan wide receiver commit Cristian Dixon. Pettaway logged 666 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore and holds a slew of other major offers. Michigan defensive line coach Shaun Nua also had a busy month on the recruiting trail, sending out three new 2022 offers in the trenches. With quarterback commit J.J. Mc- Carthy now at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, Nua wasted no time of- fering rising defensive tackle Nick James. He also has scholarships in hand from Auburn, Florida State, Mi- ami, Ohio State, Tennessee and others. Michigan also jumped in the mix for Greenwood (Ind.) Center Grove de- fensive end Caden Curry. He is a big- bodied end that will likely grow into a defensive tackle and is coming off a monster sophomore season that saw him notch 100 tackles and 10.5 sacks. Lastly, Nua looked in his own backyard and offered rising Detroit Cass Tech defensive tackle Deone Walker. At 6-5, 300 pounds, Walker is a mammoth of a prospect but still has a long way to go from a develop- ment standpoint. His only other offer is from Bowling Green. Michigan is also continuing to search for bigger pass catchers and put an offer on the table for Greer (S.C.) High wide receiver Jaleel Skinner. At 6-5, 200 pounds, Skinner is a huge target on the outside and could potentially develop into a tight end. ❑ On The Web For regular reports on Michigan football recruiting plus videos of U-M commitments and targets visit TheWolverine.com.
