12 THE WOLVERINE SEPTEMBER 2020 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Men's lacrosse fifth-year senior goalie Nick Schanhals took a very unique path to Michigan. He started for three years from 2017-19 for Division III Hope College of Holland, Mich., playing in 51 games and helping lead the Flying Dutchmen to a 39-12 record. Schanhals then transferred to Michigan as a graduate stu- dent for the 2020 campaign, making his Wolverine debut in the club's 16-8 win over Canisius Feb. 18. The North Mus- kegon, Mich., native tallied two saves against the Golden Griffins that day, but unfortunately saw the rest of U-M's sea- son canceled just four contests later due to the coronavirus. Here are a few other interesting facts you may not have known about Schanhals: Nickname: "The Schanimal." Favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: "It depends if I'm going by myself or with my family. I like going to Zingerman's with my family and getting those big pastrami sandwiches — those are money. It's hard to go wrong at Zingerman's." Best meal he can cook by himself: "I like to whip up a rack of ribs and slow cook them in the oven over night. I top them off on the grill, and have been messing around with rubs and mari- nades lately and trying to dial those in. I've had a couple years now of cooking by myself — you have to fuel that body." Hobbies: "Lacrosse, obviously. I'm also a fisherman. I worked at a ranch a few years ago, so I'm big into that and white water rafting." Favorite TV show: "'Yellowstone' right now." Favorite movie: "Probably 'Slap Shot,' because of my dad. One of the characters in it is from my hometown of Muskegon." Dream vacation: "Nothing too crazy. I'd just like to go up north. I'm headed to Baldwin, Mich., this weekend [Aug. 14- 16] — it's in the middle of nowhere but has a lot of rivers and trails to backpack on." Favorite place he's been to: "Missoula, Mont. It's pretty cool out there." Favorite professional athlete: "[Pre- mier Lacrosse League player] Blaze Rior- den. He's a pretty good goalie — I love that guy." Role model: "My parents. They 've made a huge impact on my life and have provided me with these opportunities in college and in lacrosse. They've helped make this Michigan difference possible." Why he chose Michigan: "I finished my undergrad early and had another year left, and transferred in during this coro- navirus period. I was accepted into the kinesiology department here last year with a fellowship, and it's been a great experience in the program." What he hopes to do after lacrosse: "That's a scary pros- pect. I'm interning and doing part-time work in digital mar- keting in Grand Haven, and that's been a great experience on the client relationship management side." His overall experience at Michigan: "Guys I grew up with always talked about putting on the winged helmet and walking out on a Saturday for a Michigan lacrosse or football game. Wearing that block M has been my dream, so it's been cool making that dream a reality. The coaches and guys at Michigan are great people to work with every day, and I'm excited to eventually get back together with them. I'm pumped." — Austin Fox After starting for three years at Division III Hope College in Holland, Mich., Schanhals transferred to Michigan for his final collegiate season.
