SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020 ■ 15 TRACKING THE PACK [redshirt sophomore quarterback] Devin [Leary] does coming in on day one as the guy, even though they have a room full of quarterbacks. Dave [Doeren] has said he's the guy, so I'm ready to see how he takes command and gets the offense going. "I'm also super excited about talking to [new NC State special assistant to the head coach] Ruffin McNeill, just about anything. I've heard so many good things about him and we had a brief introductory press conference with him when he first got here. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the building and not just on the field." You also watched a lot of NC State women's basketball last season and were in attendance for the ACC Tournament run earlier this spring. What are your expectations for Wes Moore and the women's basketball program moving forward after winning the conference tournament last season? "I loved covering those games the last couple of years. First of all, Reynolds Coli- seum is hands down my favorite gym in the area to cover a game. I loved the envi- ronment and the atmosphere. There are so many great personalities and so many great young ladies on that team. "As long as Wes Moore is around, you can see the program is definitely trending in the right direction. He has one of the best players in college basketball in [junior center] Elissa Cunane and now he's bring- ing in great recruiting classes every year. "They're still building, which sounds crazy because they just won the ACC championship last year. I hate that they didn't get a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament, they could have made a nice little run." ■ Junior center Elissa Cunane earned third-team All-America honors last season and is "one of the best players in college basketball," according to Pope.
