Fourth-year Brittany Altomare became the first player in
the history of the UVa women's golf program to win the ACC
individual championship. She led the 45-player field after all
three rounds April 19-21 and claimed medalist honors with
a 4-over-par score of 217. The individual crown was the third
tournament victory during the three-time All-American's
career.
Altomare hails from Shrewsbury, Mass., just west of Boston,
which made for a difficult week following the bombings
that took place at the Boston Marathon April 15 and the
subsequent manhunt that played out on national television
during the week.
"Honestly, I wanted to be home," said Altomare, who
played with a red Boston Red Sox bracelet around her left
wrist at the ACC Championships.
"It was hard to stay focused, but I've been working on
staying in the present moment, and I knew there was really
nothing that I could do to prevent whatever was going to
happen in Boston," she added. "I just tried to focus on golf
while I was on the course and talk to my friends afterward
and see how everything was going."
In early May, Altomare — who was No. 8 in the Golfweek
individual rankings — was the unanimous choice of the
league's nine head coaches for ACC Player of the Year, and
became just the third Cavalier to be tabbed as a four-time
All-ACC honoree.
