NOTEBOOK SOFTBALL Record crowd watches PSU edge Nebraska In front of the largest crowd in Penn State softball history at Beard Field and Nittany Lion Softball Park, the Nittany Lions rallied to take a 3-2 victory over 14th-ranked Nebraska on Senior Day. Lauren Yao provided the three-run double to push Penn State (15-32, 5-16 Big Ten) past the Cornhuskers (38-12, 15-6). The win was the Lions' first over a ranked opponent since a 5-3 victory over No. 22 LSU on Feb. 10, 2012, and their first over a top-15 team since they defeated No. 9 Oklahoma, 5-2, on March 18, 2011. Sophomore Marissa Diescher (1-6) earned the win for Penn State, as she matched a season-high with five scoreless innings. Yao, a senior from Los Angeles, tallied the winning three-run double in the fifth, bringing home freshman Maegan Tupinio and seniors Shannon Hutchinson and Cassidy Bell. The program set an attendance record, as 768 fans packed in to see the Lions' biggest win of the year. BASEBALL Lions top Minnesota in extra innings Posting its third walk-off victory of the season, Penn State defeated visiting Minnesota, 4-3, in the conference series finale May 5. With the victory, the Lions improved to 12-30 and 3-15 in the Big Ten. Batting with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, sophomore Taylor Skerpon hustled to first base to avoid a double play, allowing Steve Snyder to score the winning run. ICE HOCKEY Work continues on Pegula Arena Penn State conducted a walkthrough tour of the Pegula Ice Arena during Blue-White Weekend, allowing attendees to see the progress that workers have made on the future home of the Nittany Lion men's and women's ice hockey programs.
