www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 10, 2020 17 UNDER THE DOME 90 Years Ago: Oct. 11, 1930 Although Notre Dame opened head coach Knute Rockne's final season a week earlier in front of 14,751 at home with a 20-14 win over SMU, the official dedication game of the newly opened Notre Dame Stadium is held on this day in front of 40,593 (capacity then was 50,731) with a 26-2 victory against Navy. Fullback "Jumpin' Joe" Savoldi scores three touchdowns in the win. 50 Years Ago: Oct. 3, 1970 After failing to post a victory at Michigan State in nine visits to East Lansing from 1951-68 (0-8-1), the No. 4-ranked Fighting Irish finally break the jinx with a 29-0 triumph versus the Spartans. Senior quarterback Joe Theismann joins 1956 Heis- man Trophy winner Paul Hornung as the only two signal-callers for the Irish to eclipse both 100 yards passing and rushing in the same game. Theismann completes 12 of 17 passes for 147 yards (nine to Thom Gatewood for 117 yards) and adds 107 rushing yards on 13 carries. It also is Notre Dame's first football game ever on artificial turf. To prepare for the new turf, Notre Dame is permitted by the University of Michigan to practice in its stadium on Thursday and at the Wolverines' practice site on Friday. 45 Years Ago: Oct. 11, 1975 Trailing 14-0 entering the fourth quarter at North Carolina, Notre Dame records its largest comeback victory from a fourth quarter deficit with a 21-14 conquest of the Tar Heels. The previous record was an 18-13 win at Ohio State in 1935 — voted in 1969 the greatest college football game in the sport's first 100 years — after entering the fourth quarter down 13-0. Quarterback Rick Slager leads the first touchdown drive versus North Carolina that culminates with a short Al Hunter (a North Carolina native) run, cutting the margin to 14-6. On the next series, first-year head coach Dan Devine inserts sophomore Joe Montana — who lost his first career start a week earlier to Michigan State (10-3). Montana completes a deep 39-yard strike to Dan Kelleher to set up another short Hunter scoring run, and then Montana finds tight end Doug Buth for the two-point conversion to tie the score. Finally, with 1:03 left, a quick out from Montana to split end Ted Burgmeier results in an 80-yard touchdown and the victory. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 11, 1980 For the first time since the NCAA permitted freshman eligibility in 1972, No. 7-ranked Notre Dame starts a freshman quarterback, Blair Kiel, at home versus No. 13 and rising power Miami with sopho- more Jim Kelly at quarterback. Also making his first career start is senior tailback Jim Stone, who takes some burden off Kiel (4-of-17 passing for 35 yards) with 38 carries for 224 yards and a 27-yard touchdown in the 32-14 victory. Harry Oliver also kicks a school record-tying four field goals a second straight game. 25 Years Ago: Oct. 7, 1995 No. 23 Notre Dame scores 15 points in the final 1:24 to rally from a 21-14 deficit and win at No. 15 Washington, 29-21. With about three minutes left, Washington lines up to punt, but an errant snap gives Notre Dame possession at the Huskies' 18-yard line. Running back Autry Denson scores from seven yards out, and quarterback Ron Powlus finds an uncovered Derrick Mayes for the two-point conversion. Washington then drives to Notre Dame's 33-yard line before Allen Rossum intercepts a Damon Huard pass and races 76 yards for the touchdown with 28 seconds left. It is the 11th time under head coach Lou Holtz the Irish rally to victory in the fourth quarter. 15 Years Ago: Oct. 1, 2005 Quarterback Brady Quinn completes 20 of 23 passes for 283 yards in just the first half, while leading No. 13 Notre Dame to a 28-0 halftime advantage at No. 22 Purdue. Quinn finishes 29 of 36 for 440 yards with three touchdowns in the 49-28 victory. Maurice Stovall grabs eight passes for 134 yards, while Jeff Samardzija snares seven for 153 yards. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Sept. 28-Oct. 11 Notre Dame Stadium with a capacity of 50,731 was officially dedicated on Oct. 11, 1930.
