28 OCT. 10, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED fense in 2019 with 267.6 yards per game. But again, because of poor line play, it was woeful in pass protection, allowing 3.69 sacks per game, the fifth-worst mark in the country. And through two games in 2020, it ranked 13th out of 15 ACC teams in sacks allowed (nine). For the Irish, head coach Brian Kelly said after the season opener against Duke that he wanted to rotate more players into his defensive secondary to build a deeper rotation. The 52-0 win over South Florida provided him the perfect opportunity. With junior starter TaRiq Bracy held out and fifth- year senior Nick McCloud logging only 14 snaps against USF, sophomore Cam Hart and freshman Clarence Lewis played extensively — and well — in the shutout. Advantage: Notre Dame NOTRE DAME RUNNING GAME VS. FLORIDA STATE RUN DEFENSE Just when it looked like Irish sophomore Kyren Williams had emerged as the feature back for Notre Dame after rushing for 112 yards and com- piling 205 all-purpose yards in the season opener against Duke, the production torch was passed to junior tailback C'Bo Flemister in week two against USF. He responded with 127 yards on 13 carries — a 9.8-yard average — and a touchdown. Kelly celebrated the depth at this position in the preseason, and his high praise is turning into big production. Notre Dame can run four and even five backs at opposing defenses, a nice luxury as future COVID-19 quarantines loom. GAME PREVIEW: FLORIDA STATE Junior defensive back Asante Samuel Jr. earned third-team All-ACC honors last fall after posting 48 tackles and 14 passes broken up.
