Two days earlier, some 3,000 Americans had died and thousands more were injured in another shocking sneak attack, this time by Middle Eastern terrorists who hijacked U.S. passenger planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center and the Pen- tagon. A fourth airliner crashed into an isolated grassy 1eld in southwestern Pennsylvania a3er brave passengers fought to retake control of the cockpit. The football team's game at Virginia was added as the last game of the season on Dec. 1. The 5-5 Nittany Lions were 5 ½-point favorites over the 4-7 Cavaliers, with an Alamo Bowl berth guaranteed pending a victory. In weird 70 degree December weather, Penn State made too many mis- takes, and Virginia pulled o2 a 20-14 upset in a game that was decided when the Cavaliers came up with an intercep- tion in the 1nal two minutes. As these words are being written, the big unknown is whether one or more games will be played this year. Will the 2020 season begin as scheduled on the weekend of Oct. 23-24? Or will an uptick in the pandemic make the Big Ten cancel the season again, giving this year's team a unique place in Penn State's football his- tory? ■ HISTORY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 55
