22 OCT. 24, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED an illegal block on the ensuing on- side kickoff the Cardinals recovered. Following the second kickoff, Notre Dame took possession at its 34-yard line and drove 66 yards in eight plays to take a 12-7 lead (the two-point pass to fifth-year senior wideout Ja- von McKinley fell incomplete) with 3:43 remaining. Facing third-and-eight, Book scored the touchdown on a 13-yard scramble, reaching the ball just past the pylon. Feature Performer: Cunningham completed 7 of 7 passes for 58 yards and ran five times for 41 yards, with a clutch eight-yard run on fourth- and-three from the Louisville 48-yard line on the touchdown drive. Stats: Through three quarters, Notre Dame had run 50 plays for 261 yards (177 rushing, 84 passing) and Louisville 37 for 221 (135 passing and 86 rushing). Items: Louisville received the second-half kickoff and marched 83 yards in 13 plays, capped by a one- yard pass from Cunningham to tight end Marshon Ford with 7:37 left for a 7-6 edge. On the play prior to the score, Cunningham found Hawkins on the wheel route for a 29-yard gain … While running for a six-yard gain and a first down, Cunningham was injured at the 1:10 mark and was out for a series. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME, 12-7 Top Moment: With the score still 12-7, Notre Dame took possession at its 23-yard line with 7:55 remaining. It proceeded to run out the clock mostly by running but especially converting three third-down situations. • On third-and-six from the Irish 37-yard line, Book connected with McKinley over the middle for a seven-yard gain. • On third-and-six from the Notre Dame 48, Book found fifth-year se- nior receiver Ben Skowronek cross- ing across the middle for 12 yards. • On third-and-five from the Lou- isville 35, Williams shook free for a 24-yard gain down to the 11. Notre Dame was able to take a few knees from there. Feature Performer: Williams was re- lied on heavily to help keep the clock running. He carried 12 times for 57 yards during the quarter, highlighted by the 24-yard run on third-and-five that basically sealed the verdict. Stats: The Irish defense limited Louisville to 233 total yards, and only 12 in the fourth quarter. Items: Louisville faced third- and-16 and third-and-17 situations the first two series it had the ball in the fourth quarter, although the for- mer was only one play. ✦ Fifth-year senior quarterback Ian Book didn't have a big game throwing the ball, but he ran for 47 yards and scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown on a 13-yard run.
