Notre Dame trotted out the field goal unit, but ran a fake where sophomore holder/punter Jay Bram- blett took off running horizontally and eventually cut up the field. He came up two yards short. Instead of notching a three-touch- down first half, Notre Dame allowed Louisville to stay within a score and take a 7-6 lead on the first posses- sion of the second half. An unusually strong display of ball security from Louisville put even more pressure on Notre Dame's inability to put the game away and finish drives. The Cardinals committed 11 turnovers in their first four games, but none against Notre Dame. "They took care of the football," Kelly said. "I had commented earlier in the week that I thought they had beaten themselves, quite frankly, and they could very easily have been 4-0. They played like a 4-0 team today. We withstood that." DEFENSE BOUNCES BACK On Oct. 10 against Florida State, Notre Dame played its first game in three weeks, and the Irish defense looked ragged.
