www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 24, 2020 15 UNDER THE DOME 100 Years Ago: Oct. 23, 1920 Third-year head coach Knute Rockne's Fighting Irish squad, who shared the national title the year prior, win their 13th straight despite trailing 3-0 at halftime against slated patsy Valparaiso. George Gipp scores on 10- and 25-yard runs in the second half of the 28-3 victory, but Rockne is so impressed with the coaching of the outmanned Crusaders that three years later as the athletics director he hires their head coach — George Keogan — to coach Notre Dame men's basketball. The Hall-of-Famer Keogan would lead the program to Helms Foundation national titles in 1927 and 1936. 90 Years Ago: Oct. 25, 1930 On the first play of Notre Dame's 35-19 win at Pitt, Marchy Schwartz runs for a 59-yard score for the Fighting Irish. It is referred to as "The Perfect Play," because in the words of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports editor/columnist Al Abrams, "Every Pitt player was knocked on his can." 55 Years Ago: Oct. 23, 1965 No. 7 Notre Dame rushes for 308 yards and holds Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett in check in a 28-7 defeat of No. 4 USC. Not only is Garrett limited to 43 yards on 16 carries, but all four starters in the Notre Dame backfield out-rush him, led by fullback Larry Conjar's 116 yards on 25 carries while scoring all four touchdowns. Halfback Nick Eddy gains 65 yards on nine carries, halfback Bill Wolski 64 on 15 attempts and quarterback Bill Zloch 50 on 12 runs. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 25, 1980 In its first trip ever to the state of Arizona to play a football game, the No. 4-ranked Irish prevail 20-3 versus the Arizona Wildcats to improve to 6-0. With the score 7-3, freshman quarterback/punter Blair Kiel drops back to punt inside his 10 shortly before halftime, but on a cue from head coach Dan Devine, based on the formation, is told to fake the punt and run to his left. Kiel races 80 yards untouched for the score, and a week later the Irish would move up to No. 1. 30 Years Ago: Oct. 20, 1990 The final regular-season meeting between Notre Dame-Miami of what had been an uninterrupted series from 1971-90 (other than 1986) concludes with the No. 6 Fighting Irish defeating the No. 2 Hurricanes 29-20 on a picture-perfect day in South Bend (they would not meet again until 20 years later). Special teams prove pivotal when Craig Hentrich sets a school single-game record with five field goals, while junior Raghib "Rocket" Ismail returns a kickoff for a 94- yard score to tie the score at 10. The wideout Ismail is shifted to tailback in the fourth quarter and carries 13 times for 100 yards. 25 Years Ago: Oct. 21, 1995 Notre Dame runs its unbeaten string to 13 (12-0-1) against USC since 1983 with a 38-10 dismantling of the No. 5-ranked and eventual Rose Bowl champion Trojans in drizzly, cold conditions. Quarterback Ron Powlus leads an offense that converts 15 of 20 third-down attempts, while linebacker Kinnon Tatum's leaping and thunderous hit on tailback Delon Washington inside the Notre Dame 5-yard line results in a lost fumble, one of four USC turnovers. The Trojans penetrate the Irish 10-yard line on four different series but have only three points to show for it. 15 Years Ago: Oct. 22, 2005 The passing combination of quarterback Brady Quinn and wide receiver Maurice Stovall make history during No. 9 Notre Dame's 49-23 rout of BYU, which had defeated the Irish a year earlier. Among Quinn's 32 completions on 41 attempts for 467 yards are a school-record six touchdown passes, four to Stovall, whose 14 receptions (for 207 yards) are also a single-game record to go with the scoring catches. Jeff Samardzija's 10 grabs for 152 yards and two scores are overshadowed. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 19-25 Wide receiver Raghib "Rocket" Ismail had a 94-yard kickoff return for a touch- down and also shifted to tailback to rush 13 times for 100 yards while leading the No. 6 Irish to a 29-20 win over No. 2 Miami in 1990.
