Southfield (Mich.) High defensive
end Lawrence Marshall had a long,
strange ride through the recruiting process, but the journey ended
May 11 — nearly nine months before National Signing Day 2014. The
one-time Ohio State commitment
narrowed his focus to Michigan and
Michigan State before pledging to
U‑M. The Spartans seemed like they
were in line for his commitment, but
the combination of defensive coaches
on Michigan's staff was an opportu-
nity too good to pass up.
"I wasn't trying to do that [make
it seem like Michigan State was on
top]," Marshall insisted. "Michigan
State is a great school. I love their
coaching staff; Coach [Mark] Dantonio is an unbelievable coach. He
was a great head coach to me. There
was nothing with anybody else that
went wrong, I just liked Michigan
the most.
"The big thing for me is life after
football. The degree from Michigan
