michigan football The Winter Haven, Fla., native was a four-star recruit in the 2010 class, carrying tremendous promise he would develop into the bone-crushing strong safety U-M had been lacking. Safety depth will take a hit, but Robinson was thought to be at least second, and maybe third in the pecking order to replace Jordan Kovacs, and would have likely made his biggest impact on special teams. Jones would have been returning for a fifth year of eligibility after arriving as a three-star in the Class of 2009. The 6-2, 223-pound Orlando native appeared in 29 games in his career, largely on special teams though some as a reserve linebacker. He had eight career tackles. With their departures, U-M is now two under the 85-man scholarship limit for 2013. The Wolverines had been two over after signing 27 recruits in February, but defensive lineman Ken Wilkins left in mid-March and now Ringer, Robinson and Jones have decided to depart. INDUCTED • Former Michigan assistant coach Bill McCartney will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2013 class. After serving on Bo Schembechler's staff from 1974-81, McCartney was the head coach for Colorado for 13 seasons, going 93-55-5. He led the Buffaloes to Big Eight championships in 1989, 1990 and 1991, and guided Colorado to the 1990 Associated Press national title. Former Wolverines Erick Anderson, Rob Lytle and Jumbo Elliott were on the 2013 ballot but were not elected. A fullback from 1973-76, Lytle rushed for 3,307 yards and 26 touchdowns on 557 career carries (5.9 yards per rush), including a pair of 1,000-yard seasons in both 1975 (1,030) and 1976 (1,469). Elliott was a four-year starter at left tackle for the Wolverines from 1984-87, earning first-team All-American honors in both his junior and senior seasons. Michigan's lone Butkas Award winner as the nation's top linebacker, Anderson started six games during his redshirt freshman year in 1988 and would start 36 over his final three seasons. He ranks third all time at U-M with 428 career tackles. INTRODUCED • Michigan has announced a home-and-home series with Virginia Tech for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Wolverines will welcome the Hokies Sept. 19, 2020 and will travel to Blacksburg Sept. 11, 2021. U-M and Virginia Tech have met only once before, in the 2012 Sugar Bowl, with Michigan prevailing 23-20 in overtime. • Bob Lopez, who had served as Michigan's director of football operations, has been promoted to associate athletic director for football, while Nolan Jones, previously of Southern Mississippi and Kentucky, will assume Lopez's old post.
