J ames Franklin and the Nittany Lion coaching sta5 added a transfer in Oc- tober when former Shippenburg wide receiver Winston Eubanks announced that he will enroll at Penn State in Janu- ary. A two-time team captain for the Red Raiders, the 6-foot-0, 185-pound Eu- banks put up some impressive numbers at the Division II level, totaling 148 recep- tions for 2,853 yards and 28 touchdowns against schools in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. A6er the 2020 sea- son was canceled this past summer, he thought it might be best to use his 4nal year of eligibility elsewhere, so he entered the transfer portal in July. Multiple Divi- sion I programs, including Pitt, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Rice and Louisiana-Mon- roe, all showed interested. But in the end, he chose the Nittany Lions. BWI's Ryan Snyder caught up with Eu- banks recently to get a better feel for both the person and the player, and to learn what he hopes to get out of his time in State College. BWI What's the main reason you're transferring to Penn State? Is this pri- marily because the PSAC isn't playing this season? Is it because you have NFL aspirations? Maybe a combination of the two? EUBANKS Yeah, I de4nitely would say it's a combination of the two. I'm the kind of person that, when I say I commit somewhere, I de4nitely mean it. I did commit to Shippensburg when I was coming out of high school, and I in- tended on 4nishing my career here. I had a great tenure there, but obviously, with the whole COVID-19 pandemic and canceling the season, I had to make a re- ally tough decision on what I want to do with my future. The option for me to stay at Shippensburg wasn't looking the best, so I decided to enter the transfer portal. I had many conversations with my coaching sta5, and they de4nitely understood. I think you see a lot of players go into the transfer portal because [they aren't getting] playing time or because of problems with the coaching sta5, but this de4nitely wasn't one of those situa- tions. The coaches knew I was just try- ing to put myself in the best position, so they supported me 100 percent. BWI Why is Penn State the right school? From what I understand, you haven't really been up here much. Is this just mainly about trusting Coach Franklin, trusting in the future of the I N T E R V I E W W I N S T O N E U B A N K S This is a program that's very historic and prestigious.
