JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 ■ 15 TRACKING THE PACK When the ACC was formed in the summer of 1953, the Wolfpack was a football doormat, failing to win a conference game in its first three seasons. Now, for the second time in the past four years head coach Dave Doeren is setting new standards for NC State in ACC action. A 10-point win over Georgia Tech on Senior Day in the regular-season finale provided the Wolfpack with a program-best seventh ACC win. While it is true there were two more games than normal, the Pack's .700 winning percentage in league play still is among the tops in pro- gram history and second best over the past quarter-century. Doeren also joins Earle Edwards as the only coaches in Wolfpack history to lead a pair of teams to at least six ACC wins. Edwards did it in 1963 and 1968. Perhaps appropriately, Edwards, with 77 wins at NC State, is the only Wolfpack coach to top Doeren's current total of 55 victories. Doeren moved past Dick Sheridan's 52 wins from 1986-92 when the Wolfpack defeated No. 21 Liberty, 15-14, on Nov. 21.
