On May 2, the University of Notre Dame announced a feasibility study to turn its iconic football stadium into a campus nerve center, at the same time sprucing up the 83-year-old structure in a variety of ways. Possibilities include student and media centers, additional classroom space and retail property. The stadium itself could possibly expand by a few thousand seats, with club seating and a new press box on the to-do list. Forget outrageously bright basketball uniforms, this announcement stunned Fighting Irish fans like a hardhit foul ball while you're focused on your hot dog. Change doesn't go over too well in these parts. Before folks even had a chance to see an artist's rendering of the project released by Notre Dame, talk of giant scoreboards blocking Touchdown Jesus and artificial turf replacing the Kentucky bluegrass exploded on social media sites. Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick went on record earlier this year saying there's no plan to introduce either in the years to come. He didn't, however, rule out such upgrades if this project moves from the conceptual to physical stage.
