1. Stanford — Nov. 30 2012 Record: 12-2 (8-1 Pac 12) Last Meeting: Notre Dame 20, Stanford 13 OT (2012) Impact Player: Sophomore QB Kevin Hogan — The rookie quarterback provided a solution to an ailing Cardinal offense when he took over as the team's starter with five games left on the schedule. He threw nine touchdown passes and ran for two more. That dual threat could have made the overtime game in South Bend even more interesting than it was. Outlook: Stanford's road-grader offense likely won't undergo any major changes for the 2013 season. This year's offensive line features senior guard David Yankey (6-5, 311 pounds) as the next in a consistent line of pro prospects in the trenches. He'll be clearing the path for a growing list of capable backs that includes veterans Tyler Gaffney and Anthony Wilkerson, and sophomore Barry Sanders. The Cardinal will need all three of them to pitch in to replace the program's all-time leading rusher, Stepfan Taylor. Inside linebacker Shayne Skov returns for a fifth season to anchor the middle of Stanford's defense. He and fellow seniors Trent Murphy and A.J. Tarpley are expected to uphold that group's reputation as one of the best in the country. Spring Storyline: Questions about head coach David Shaw's ability to keep the Stanford program moving in the right direction have largely been silenced on the West Coast. Shaw has won two Pac12 Coach of the Year awards in his first two years on the job. The big question in Palo Alto this year is whether the Cardinal can make it through the conference unscathed this year and elevate from a perennial BCS bowl team to a bona fide national championship contender. If the offense keeps rolling without Taylor, the season finale against the Irish in November could shape up to be a classic.
