20 CAVALIER CORNER Top Teams 1981 Cross Country — Claimed the first-ever national title in women's cross country, tallying a score of 36 points that remains the best by a team in the NCAA Championships. UVA had six All-America performers. 1982 Cross Country — Won the NCAA championship for a second straight year behind the program's first-ever individual champion, Les- ley Welch, and had five All-America performers. 1986 Track & Field — Captured 12 ACC individual titles on the way to the program's fourth straight league cham- pionship as part of a five-year stretch of consecutive conference titles. 1990 Basketball — Posted a 29-6 record and advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history. It was only the second time an ACC team had accomplished the latter feat. This squad also won the first ACC championship for the program. 1991 Basketball — Went 31-3 and ad- vanced to the NCAA championship game for the first time in program history with a win over Connecticut in the Final Four. The Cavaliers went 14-0 in league play and won the ACC regular-season crown. Dawn Staley was named the Naismith Player of the Year and Honda Sports Award winner, while Debbie Ryan was tabbed as the Naismith Coach of the Year. 1991 Lacrosse — Won the NCAA cham- pionship for the first time in program history and finished with a 17-1 record. 1991 Soccer — Advanced to the semifi- nals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history with a 14-5-3 record. 1992 Basketball — Reached the Final Four for the third consecutive season, posting a 32-2 record. The Wahoos ended the season ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll and No. 2 in the Coaches Poll. Virginia won the ACC Tournament cham- pionship for the second time in three years and went 15-1 to win the regular- season crown. Staley was named Nai- smith Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. 1993 Lacrosse — Won the NCAA cham- pionship for the second time in program history and second time in three years with a 15-1 record. 1997 Field Hockey — Advanced to the semifinals at the NCAA Champion- ships for the first time in program history. Virginia posted a 19-3 record and won the ACC regular-season title. 2004 Lacrosse — Won the NCAA championship for the third time in program history with an overall mark of 19-3. Amy Appelt won the Tewaaraton Trophy as the National Player of the Year to become Virgin- ia's first recipient of the award. 2004 Soccer — Claimed the first ACC championship in program history with a 17-3-2 record, winning the confer- ence title over top-ranked North Caro- lina in the finals of the ACC Tourna- ment in a penalty kick shootout. 2009 Field Hockey — Posted 20 wins, the most in program history for a season, and advanced to the semi- finals at the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history. The squad featured Michelle Vittese and Paige Selenski, who went on to be the first Olympians for the program. 2010 Rowing — Earned the first NCAA championship in program history, with the Varsity Four also claiming a national title. The Cavaliers also won the ACC champion- ship for the 10th time in program history. 2012 Rowing — Won the NCAA title for the second time in program history, with the Varsity Eight also winning a na- tional championship. The Cavaliers won the ACC championship for the 12th time. 2013 Soccer — Advanced to the Col- lege Cup with a 24-1-1 record, marking only the second time the program had advanced to the national semifinals. Vir- ginia charged through the regular sea- son with a perfect 19-0-0 record.
