Doerer's 24-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright. SECOND QUARTER CLEMSON 24, NOTRE DAME 3 Top Moment: Leading 17-3 in the closing half-minute of the first half, Clemson opted to go for it on fourth- and-one from the Notre Dame 44- yard line — and Etienne took the stretch play to the left for a touch- down with 21 seconds remaining. It culminated an 88-yard drive in 10 plays. On the first play of that march, fifth-year senior defensive end Ade Ogundeji nearly brought down Lawrence near the goal line, but the Clemson quarterback managed to break free and throw the ball away. Feature Performer: Lawrence took command of the game with both his passing and running to keep the Irish defense on its heels. During the quarter, he completed 7 of 11 passes for 111 yards and carried three times for 25 yards. That also helped open up the ground attack for Etienne, who had 98 yards on eight carries by halftime. Stats: Clemson totaled 339 first- half yards, 199 passing and 140 rush- ing. Notre Dame had 169 (131 pass- ing, 38 rushing), and only 49 in the second quarter. Items: After Clemson's touchdown to move ahead 7-3, Notre Dame used a 30-yard completion from Book to junior tight end Tommy Tremble to advance to the Tigers' 35-yard line. However, on fourth-and-three from the 28-yard line, a scrambling Book threw slightly behind an open Davis and the ball fell out of his hands … With momentum back on Clemson's side, Lawrence rushed twice for 14 yards, and then stepped up in the pocket while delivering a 33-yard touchdown strike to freshman E.J. Williams with 9:24 left for a 14-3 ad- vantage … Afterwards, on second- and-one from his 34-yard line, Book was sacked on back-to-back plays, resulting in a Notre Dame punt.
