Lou Holtz, 1986-96 Because predecessor Gerry Faust was only 30‑26‑1 from 1981‑85, assistants from his staff were not in demand to be head coaches. When Holtz transformed Notre Dame back to its halcyon days, the demand rose: • Barry Alvarez was hired as outside linebackers coach in 1987 and one year later was promoted to defensive coordinator — a first in his career, as it was for Lea in 2018. The Irish went on to win the national title that season and start a school‑record 23‑game winning streak. In 1990, Alvarez was hired as the head coach at Wisconsin and began a remarkable transformation for the moribund program, highlighted by a 3‑0 record in the Rose Bowl and a 120‑73‑4 mark from 1990‑2005 before stepping down to become the school's director of athletics, a post he still holds. • Running backs coach Jim Strong (1987‑89) was hired by UNLV, but he was fired after a four‑ year mark of 17‑27 and went into real estate afterwards. • Defensive line coach John Palermo (1988‑89) accepted the Austin Peay position, but following a 0‑11 debut, he went back to coach for Alvarez through 2005, and is still in the business today. • Receivers/quarterbacks coach Pete Cordelli (1986‑90) was hired by Holtz's alma mater, Kent State, but mostly left coaching after a three‑year mark of 3‑30 from 1991‑93. • Running backs/quarterbacks coach Peter Vaas (1990‑91) was named head coach at Holy Cross, but his four years with the Crusaders finished with a 14‑30 ledger. • Skip Holtz, the boss' son, instructed receivers for the Irish from 1990‑91 and added offensive coordinator duties in 1992‑93 before serving as a head coach at four different schools, with his best stint at Louisiana Tech from 2013 to the present with a 61‑39 mark, highlighted by a six‑game bowl winning streak. Overall he is 149‑110, and his victories represent the most ever in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) by a Notre Dame graduate, surpassing the 141 that Frank Thomas had at Chattanooga and Alabama from 1927‑46. • Defensive coordinator Rick Minter (1992‑93) was 53‑63‑1 at Cincinnati from 1994‑2003 before a second stint at Notre Dame in 2005‑06. • Defensive coordinator Bob Davie (1994‑96) succeeded Holtz at Notre Dame and was 35‑25 before getting fired at the end of the 2001 season. • Offensive coordinator Dave Roberts (1994‑96) had back‑to‑back 2‑9 campaigns at Baylor in 1997‑ 98 before getting fired. Post-Holtz & Pre-Kelly Era: 1997-2010 • Receivers coach Urban Meyer (1996‑2000) be‑ came one of the titans in his profession in the 21st century, joining Nick Saban as the lone coaches to win national titles at two different schools, with Meyer first achieving it at Florida (2006 and 2008) and then Ohio State (2014). His .854 winning percentage (187‑32) is third all time on the FBS chart, behind only the Notre Dame duo of Knute Rockne (.881) and Frank Leahy (.864), who also coached two seasons at Boston College. • Offensive coordinator/running backs coach Mike Haywood (2005‑08) was 10‑15 at Miami (Ohio) before a hiatus from coaching. • Receivers coach Rob Ianello (2005‑09) was named Akron head coach after the dismissal of head coach Charlie Weis, but was let go after two seasons with a 2‑22 mark.
