up with their gift for the entire facility, Tor asked the Holubas to step aside, and they agreed. As the new indoor practice facility was being built in 1986, Stanley had a sudden heart attack in May that shocked the family. "It was unexpected, and we were totally unprepared," Bob Holuba said. "If Dad had been aware of his heart problem with his doctor, he never shared it with any- one. He died slowly over the next six months as his heart muscles deteriorated from the loss of blood. It was a motivat- ing factor for me before my dad's passing, which I knew was going to be imminent, to recognize the school for the education it gave to my dad and me, and for how it fulfilled my dad's lifetime dream and not only served him but also his son Bobby both on and off the field." In July 1986, Holuba contacted former football captain Steve Garban, then Penn State's vice president of finance, about making the major donation for the new indoor facility. "Garban said he would talk to Joe, because it's Joe's facility," Hol- uba said. "Joe was thrilled by it. My dad understood the value of a Penn State ed- ucation and the lessons I would learn earning my scholarship on its football team. The best way I could have ever thanked my dad was by helping Penn State build Holuba Hall." Bob still remembers Paterno's emo- tional tribute to his father at the dedica- tion ceremonies on April 26, 1987. "Joe stood on the podium and shared how he and my dad went back to the early 1950s before there was a Nittany Lion Club and fundraising," Holuba recalled. "Joe said, 'Years from now, when visitors to this building look at this plaque, Holuba Hall, and say, who is Stan Holuba, I'll be here to tell them who he is and what he meant to the legacy of Penn State football.' " Of course, Paterno is no longer alive to tell visitors who Stanley Holuba was. BWI readers now know. Leave it to Stanley to provide the final words, a sentiment shared with many Penn Staters. They were published on the last page of the Holuba Hall 1987 dedication program: "All I do is brag about Penn State" ■ No. 76 in Lou Prato's book Autographed copies available via louprato@comcast.net or through Lou Prato & Associates at 814-954-5171 Price: $16.95 plus shipping, handling and tax where applicable Also available with autograph: Lou's book We Are Penn State: The Remarkable Journey of the 2012 Nittany Lions Price: $19.95 plus shipping, handling and tax where applicable
