SOPHIE HANSSON
Swimming
Forget limiting it to NC State — Wolfpack junior breaststroke star Sophie Hansson is proving to be
one of the best at her specialty in ACC history.
At the ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 17-20 in Greensboro, N.C., Hans-
son swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events for the third consecutive year, making her the first
Wolfpack swimmer ever to accomplish a sweep of the events in their first three seasons.
Hansson did it in spectacular fashion, too. She won the 100-yard race with a time of 57.45 seconds,
a new ACC record. She returned to win the 200 in 2:04.87, becoming the first NC State swimmer to
complete the race in under 2:05.
The native of Helsingborg, Sweden, also participated on the Pack relay teams in the 200 and 400
distances that set new program records at the meet.
Hansson is now a 10-time ACC champion, counting four relay wins. When she was the ACC Women's
Freshman of the Year in 2019, she was a third-place finisher behind a pair of seniors in both the 100
and 200 breaststroke races at the NCAA Championships. However, she was unable to compete for the
titles in 2020 due to COVID-19 canceling the NCAA meet.
This year's NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled to take place March
17-20 in Greensboro.
