After defeating Davidson 13-3 in the first game of a season-opening doubleheader on
Feb. 20, Wolfpack freshman right-handed pitcher Sam Highfill took the mound to start
game two, which the Wolfpack would win 6-4. Highfill was an effective starter that eve-
ning, allowing only two earned runs on two hits in five innings and striking out seven.
Opening day this year came two days later than anticipated after the cancellation of
the originally scheduled series following COVID-19 issues at VMI. A hastily arranged
doubleheader with Davidson was put on the books to replace some of the lost series.
When the first pitch was thrown, it ended 347 days between baseball games for the
Wolfpack. NC State was 14-3 after a walk-off win over visiting North Carolina A&T on
March 11, 2020. Two days later, a home series against Boston College was canceled, and
soon after the rest of the season was called off.
