"We should have gotten him the ball more as a junior," Browning said. "I look at that as my fault. I put that on me. Now, like so many kids, did he take a big leap between his junior and senior year? Ab- solutely. They all do that to some degree, but we should have gotten him the ball more because he's got all the tools." When speaking about Wallace's strengths, Browning gushed over his speed, his competitiveness and his jump- ing ability. He's got a solid football IQ , too, especially for a player who picked the game up so late. But he's also got a skill that Browning considers unique. "When we /rst got him, and he was learning the o0ense, he's the only player I've ever coached who can watch a route and what it's supposed to look like, then run it perfectly a2er he watched it," Browning said. "That's a trait you won't see on /lm, but [Penn State's] coaches are going to absolutely love him for that." As intriguing a player as Wallace is, his recruitment was almost equally interest- ing. Rated a three-star prospect by Ri- vals.com and the No. 13 overall recruit in Alabama, he collected eight o0ers in total: Tulane, South Alabama, Houston, Mary- land, South Carolina, Tennessee, Duke and Penn State. Wallace committed to Duke in October 2020, but the Nittany Lions o1cially of- fered him a scholarship soon therea2er, and it didn't take long for him to recon- sider his options. "Right when I got the o0er, I was think- ing hard about Penn State," he said. "I re- ally like the history at Penn State, and the combination of education and athletics makes them the best /t for me." ■ WALLACE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 18
