16 THE WOLVERINE APRIL 2021   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Field hockey senior midfielder Kayla Reed traveled 8,385 miles from her hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, to spend her collegiate days in Ann Arbor. She has been a starter from the day she stepped on campus, opening all 24 of Michigan's games as a freshman in 2017 and then 37 of the program's 41 contests over the following two campaigns. Reed kicked off the Maize and Blue's current season with a bang, scoring one of the club's two goals in its 2-1 triumph over Indiana March 5. Here are a few other interesting facts you may not have known about her: Nickname: "My teammates call me Kwolia, and it began my freshman year." Favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: "I like going to Gratzi when my parents come into town." Best meal she can cook by herself: "I'm from New Zealand, so lamb roast is my go-to." Hobbies: "When I'm not in Michigan, I like scuba diving and do it quite often back home. I also enjoy snowboarding." Favorite TV show: "I don't really have one. I don't know why, but I've never had one before. I've watched a lot of shows but can't pick a favorite." Favorite movie: "It changes often. I like a classic rom-com Cinderella story. I don't have one specific favorite though, and it varies by the day." Dream vacation: "I've always wanted to go to Greece." Favorite place she's been to: "A place I love going to is Queenstown in New Zealand." Favo r i te p ro fe s s i o n a l at h l e te : "Richie McCaw. He was the captain of the All Blacks National Team that won two World Cups. He's a good rugby player, but I look up to him because of who he is in general. He's like the [Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback] Tom Brady of the rugby world." Role model: "I looked up to my old- est brother, who was a good rugby player when he was younger. He encourages me to aim high and I've always wanted to be like him. Even though he doesn't play hockey, he's a good sportsman and I can pick up things just by watching games. I talk to him even when I don't want to be- cause he always gives good advice." Why she chose Michigan: "I checked out three colleges during my official visits and Michigan was my last one. Of the three places, it felt the most like home. It had a good mixture of coach- ing and teammates that I clicked with instantly. It was important to have the sense of home halfway across the world." What she hopes to do after field hockey: "Hopefully my athletic days won't come to an end after college be- cause I'd like to keep playing after I grad- uate. I hope to continue with my degree and maybe do sports psychology." — Austin Fox Reed entered the 2020 season (delayed to spring) with 61 games started, 14 goals and seven assists.
