With the 65-scholarship limit about to take effect starting with the 2014 season, don't expect to see a lot of the freshmen being redshirted, especially at the skill positions. I certainly would expect to see freshmen like Sickels, Bell, Anthony and Jordan Smith, Robinson and possibly defensive end Curtis Cothran and cornerback Kasey Gaines all play on special teams. But I also believe Anderson, Hamilton, Breneman, Sickels, Bell and Robinson could see some playing time at their respective positions on offense and defense. Let's break those players down individually. Richy Anderson (5-11, 171, WR): Anderson showed in spring practice that he's ready for action as a slot wide receiver. He'll compete with redshirt junior Alex Kenney. Anderson was a real surprise to me in spring practice. Adam Breneman (6-4, 232, TE): BWI is hearing that he won't redshirt. Coming off a knee injury that cost him his senior season at Cedar Cliff (Pa.) High last fall, Breneman is likely to play the F tight end position. DaeSean Hamilton (6-0, 182, WR): With Malik Golden and Trevor Williams having been moved to the secondary after starting their careers at wide receiver, Hamilton will have a chance to make the six- or sevenman rotation at wide receiver. Garrett Sickels (6-4, 245, DE): With Sean Stanley and Pete Massaro having graduated, Sickels could make the depth chart at the strongside defensive end position. I'm projecting C.J. Olaniyan and Deion Barnes as the starting defensive ends, with Brad Bars, Anthony Zettel and Evan Schwan providing the depth. Brandon Bell (6-1, 225, LB): Depth is a real problem at linebacker. The only scholarship depth in the middle is provided by redshirt freshman Gary Wooten; at outside linebacker, the key backup is redshirt sophomore Ben Kline. Bell will be needed for depth, especially at the middle linebacker spot. Glenn Carson (MLB), Nyeem Wartman (Sam OLB), and Mike Hull (Will OLB) are the projected starters. Neiko Robinson (6-0, 178, DB): Next to Hackenberg, I believe Robinson could have the biggest impact this fall among the members of Penn State's Class of 2013. I love his football instincts, and I believe he can help immediately with the return game on special teams. As for the returning players – nearly 75 were expected to be on campus at the start of June – Penn State will get a lift from Bill Belton, who is on his way back from a toe injury that kept him out of the last week of spring practice. It's been reported that Belton should be healthy by the time summer workout sessions start. However, one of his fellow running backs, redshirt junior Zach Zwinak, needed surgery on his left wrist. Zwinak is expected to be healthy again sometime during preseason practice. At tight end, Jesse James appears to have the potential to develop into a high NFL draft choice. He has to stay healthy, of course, but James by all accounts had an impressive spring. In fact, I've been told by numerous people that he enjoyed the best spring of anyone on offense or defense. James stands 6-7, 265 pounds, and since January he's run sub-4.7 40-yard times. The only drawback to his success is that he might be tempted to make himself eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft. If he stays healthy, James certainly appears to have that kind of potential. One final note: Expect sophomores Jordan Lucas and Trevor Williams to be the starting cornerbacks against Syracuse. Both Lucas and Williams will begin preseason practice as the No. 1 players at those positions. Both defensive backs had outstanding spring practice sessions. In my mind, the only reason Williams didn't share the Jim O'Hora Award with Lucas and Olaniyan is the fact that he wasn't moved to cornerback until the middle of spring practice. Williams had a superb Blue-White Game at the boundary cornerback position. This was the best position switch the coaches made in spring practice. the two best barbecue restaurants have combined forces to meet all of your game day tailgating needs!
