APRIL 2021 29 cavalier profile CARL SÖDERLUND Graduate Student • Tennis When you win an NCAA, ACC and ITA Indoor championship as a first-year, where do you go from there? For men's tennis player Carl Söderlund, his rookie season's trophy haul was just the beginning. Since being a significant contributor to the team's 2017 championship trifecta, he has been named the 2019 ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, 2019 ACC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 2019 and 2020 Virginia athletics department's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year (only the second Cavalier in the history of the award to twice win the honor), a 2020 ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgradu- ate Scholarship Award winner, and a 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-American. He proudly displays these plaques and trophies in his room, alongside other honors such as the participation banner from his time as a 2020 Swedish Davis Cup team member. However, it is the location of these walls that is perhaps his most significant accomplishment as a student-athlete. Last year, Söderlund became the first men's tennis player to live on The Lawn. This year, the McIntire School of Commerce graduate student lives on The Range, which is also a first for his program. "It was an honor to live on The Lawn last year," Söderlund said. "I thought it was a great way to get to know new people and get a little bit more involved in the community. It's fun and nice to be on Grounds and close to everything. I loved Halloween there with my teammates dressed up, giving candy to the kids. Nice weather days, when you can have your door open, do your homework and have people stopping by, that's great for both The Lawn and The Range." When pressed to say which he preferred, The Lawn or The Range, he gives a qualified answer. "I would say living on The Lawn because I got to have at least one semester there when life was a little bit normal," he said. "But I would assume — under more normal circumstances — that The Range is as much fun." — Melissa Dudek Photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVA Athletics
