www.BLUEANDGOLD.com MAY 2021 41 ND SPORTS IRISH ROUNDUP Baseball (13-5 Overall, 12-5 ACC) Notre Dame stood in second place in the ACC after winning 9 of 12 games from March 12 through April 5… As of April 5, senior first baseman Niko Kavadas led the ACC in home runs (11) and slugging percent- age (.933), and was tied for fourth in RBI (28) … Senior outfielder Ryan Cole was tied for fifth in the league in hitting (.378 average) and was first in on-base percentage (.521). Men's Golf The Irish finished second out of 16 teams at the Michigan State Invite March 8-9 … Junior Andrew O'Leary shot a 5-under 211 to notch a career-best fourth-place showing … Notre Dame came in third out of 15 squads at the Augusta Haskins Award Invi- tational April 4-5 … Sophomore Palmer Jackson led the way with a 9-under 207 to place fifth. Women's Golf Notre Dame finished 15th out of 15 teams at the Valspar Augusta Invitational March 13-14, came in 17th out of 18 squads at the Clemson Invitational March 26-28 and placed second out of five teams in the IU Spring Challenge April 4-5 … Sophomore Lau- ren Beaudreau shot a 10-under 206 to capture the individual tournament title in the IU Spring Challenge. Hockey (14-13-2 Overall, 12-10-2 Big Ten) Notre Dame suffered a 6-3 loss to Penn State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament March 14 in South Bend … Despite the defeat, the Irish earned their fifth consecutive bid — the second-longest such streak in the nation — to play in the NCAA Tournament … Notre Dame was slotted as the No. 4 seed in the Albany (N.Y.) Regional and was set to face No. 1 Boston College March 27, but had to withdraw from the tournament before competing due to some positive COVID-19 test results within the program … Junior defenseman Spencer Stastney and junior forward Alex Steeves earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. Men's Lacrosse (6-1 Overall, 2-1 ACC) The No. 4 Irish posted a 10-3 win over Marquette March 17 and a 19-5 triumph over Cleveland State March 20, before being edged 12-11 at Virginia March 27 … Notre Dame rebounded with an 18-11 victory at then No. 4 Syracuse April 3 … Sophomore attacker Pat Kavanagh dished out 26 assists in his first six contests this season to lead the NCAA in as- sists per game with an average of 4.33 as of April 5 … Sophomore goalie Liam Entenmann ranked second in the country in goals against average (7.35) and was ninth in save percentage (.596) as of April 5. Women's Lacrosse (6-2 Overall, 3-2 ACC) No. 5 Notre Dame lost back-to-back contests at Syracuse March 11 and 14, but bounced back with victories versus Liberty (19-5) March 19, at Louisville (15-10) March 21, at Duke (13-9) March 28 and at Virginia (12-10) April 3 … Fifth-year senior attacker Samantha Lynch led the Irish in goals per game (3.25) and points per game (4.00), and ranked fifth and sev- enth, respectively, in the ACC in those two categories as of April 5. Rowing The Irish competed at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invi- tational March 13-14 and versus Louisville March 27 in Indianapolis … There was no team scoring at either event … Notre Dame came out on top in five races in Oak Ridge, and won four of five against the Cardinals. Men's Soccer (8-8 Overall, 4-6 ACC) Notre Dame posted shutouts against Duke (2-0) March 12 and Calvin (1-0) March 16, but dropped their next three matches — 3-2 at Wake Forest March 20, 2-1 in overtime at North Carolina March 27 and 2-0 at Pittsburgh April 3 … After hosting Virginia Tech April 9, the Irish will learn whether or not they will be invited to the NCAA Tournament … As of April 5, junior forward Jack Lynn ranked second in the ACC in goals per game (0.833). Women's Soccer (6-5 Overall, 4-4 ACC) The Irish notched a pair of 2-0 wins over Cincin- nati March 11 and at Missouri March 20 … Matches at Kansas March 28 and at Missouri April 2 were canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests, subsequent quarantining and contact tracing within the Irish pro- gram … Notre Dame is scheduled to play at Oklahoma State April 11 and at TCU April 17 before learning its NCAA Tournament fate. Softball (17-12 Overall, 9-10 ACC) Notre Dame won 10 of its 17 games between March 12 and April 4, highlighted by taking three of four at Georgia Tech March 19-21 and sweeping three games from NC State March 26-27 … As of April 5, senior outfielder Abby Sweet had been named the ACC Player of the Week three times and was leading the league with a .495 batting average. Swimming and Diving The Irish women posted a program-best 29th-place finish at the NCAA Championships March 17-20 in Greensboro, N.C. … The men's squad placed 25th at the NCAA Championships March 24-27 in Greens- boro, N.C. … Sophomore Jack Hoagland placed fifth in the 1,650 free to earn first-team All-America ac- colades for the first time in his career. Men's Tennis (10-8 Overall, 4-4 ACC) The Irish cruised to a 6-1 win at home versus Mar- quette March 19, suffered a 6-1 defeat at Florida State March 26 and beat Louisville 4-0 April 3 … Notre Dame has five more regular-season matches prior to the ACC Championship April 15-19 in Rome, Ga. Women's Tennis (10-11 Overall, 4-8 ACC) Notre Dame posted a 4-3 home win over Wake Forest March 12, but then dropped five straight matches — versus North Carolina State, at Miami, at Florida State, at North Carolina and at Duke — from March 13-29 … The Irish got back in the win column with a 4-3 triumph over Louisville April 3 … Two more regular-season contests are scheduled before they take part in the ACC Championship April 15-19 in Rome, Ga. Indoor Track & Field The Irish women tied for 16th and the men tied for 37th at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-13 at Fayetteville, Ark. … Senior Rachel Tanczos earned first-team All-America accolades with a run- ner-up finish in the weight throw (a season-best toss of 76 feet, 3 inches), freshman Jadin O'Brien broke the program record with 4,296 points and a fourth- place finish en route to first-team All-America rec- ognition in the pentathlon, and sophomore Samuel Voelz placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.62 to earn first-team All-America honors. Volleyball (14-3 Overall, 13-3 ACC) Notre Dame won five of their final seven regular- season matches from March 12-April 2 to finish in second place in the ACC, just behind Louisville … The Irish were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years and the 21st time in program history … They will face Army April 14 in Omaha, Neb., with the winner taking on No. 10 national seed Oregon April 15 … Junior outside hitter Charley Niego and junior setter Zoe Nunez earned first-team All-ACC honors; sophomore outside hitter Caroline Meuth and freshman middle blocker Lindsey Miller received second-team All-ACC recognition; and Miller, outside hitter Aubrey Hamil- ton and libero Hattie Monson were all named to the ACC All-Freshman team. — Steve Downey Juniors Charley Niego and Zoe Nunez (pictured above) both earned first-team All-ACC honors while leading the Irish volleyball team to an NCAA Tournament berth.
