When the 13th- seeded Lions take the court April 15 against either North Carolina A&T or Rice in the second round, they will become the only team to have played in every NCAA Division I women's volleyball tourney to date. That's because Stanford went 2-8 this year and didn't make the 1eld of 48, missing NCAAs for the 1rst time. But while constancy has been a hallmark of Penn State's volleyball program under longtime coach Russ Rose, it was not a hallmark of this particular season. Perhaps more than any other PSU team, the women's volleyball squad has had its campaign upended by the pandemic. Six matches had to be postponed, four of which were never made up, and the team's last four matches of the regular season were canceled outright. By the time they open the NCAA tournament, it will have been 26 days since the Nittany Lions last played a match. With its series vs. Wisconsin and Nebraska scrapped, Penn State 1nished its regular season with 1ve consecutive wins and 14 consecutive set victories. No matter who wins the April 14 match that will determine their second-round opponent, the Nittany Lions will need to rekindle that spark. North Carolina A&T went 11-1 and won the MEAC tournament, while Rice went 16-5, including a 3-2 victory over then-No. 2 Texas in its regular-season 1nale. Penn State was the lowest-seeded of the six Big Ten teams that made the 1eld, so there's no reason for overcon1dence.
